This review is from: LORD OF THE ISLAND (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this book April, 1994, and it's been on my keeper shelf ever since. I read it about twice a year and know it by heart. For me, it's a comfort book, a book to read when I'm feeling sad, sick, or just in need of a book that feels like an old friend. This story has the wounded heroine/hero theme.

The heroine Tess is an American who has come to the Isle of Skye to get her life back on track, to start living again and painting again. Two years ago her husband Ben and her unborn child were taken from her in a tragic car accident, and in her depression, Tess tried to end it all. Now, Tess is at a crossroads, trying to figure out how to let that loss and hurt go once and for all.

The hero Ian is the Laird of the island, and he is scarred in his own way. Once a carefree playboy, Ian is now recovering from a severe injury and burns that have left his face and body scarred. He is embittered, surly, and angry at life.

The first meeting between Tess and Ian doesn't go well. She finds him arrogant and rude; she actually calls him m'lord arrogance. For his part, Ian thinks Tess must be a flighty artist, a helpless Yank. Yet they cannot deny the fascination and attraction there. I really loved these two sad and lost people who turn to each other in need, with tenderness and longing. Ian's sweet wooing of Tess will make you love this gentle Scot. I know I do.

There is more to the story- island politics, threats of violence, and intrigue, but the main story is the strong but gentle love between Tess and Ian. I loved seeing Tess embracing life and love again, and Ian refusing to let the woman he loves slip away from him.

** possible spoiler **

This story also has a pregnancy theme as well. Just wanted to mentioned this as some readers actively search out that theme and might want to know it's part of this story. And it's done really sweetly.
