Film's Fantastic (five*s)DVD for non-French is TERRIBLE!!!!!,
By
This review is from: La Face cachée de la lune (DVD)
I loved, loved, loved this film when it played in theatre. Took friends, and we all agreed it was one of the best Canadian films we have ever seen.Despite that, aviod this DVD unless you're fluent in French (a US version will be released soon in the states, I'm going to check it out). The main problem? HORRIBLE english subtitles. The only english subtitles are for the deaf, meaning everyting is subtitled. For example [music playing] [inaudible chatter] and the lyrics to songs in English (but not the French ones?!?). A real dissapointment and too distracting for me to keep the dvd. I wrote the production company about it but god luck ever getting response from them. There's a reason you don't subtitle films like this, or at least subtitle them two ways which can be selected. This is such a beautiful film, it's a shame to see it so mishandled. Aliance Atlantis keeps screwing up DVD movies, what with the Canadian 2 disk Triplets of Belville with less extras then the one disk American one, the blip on the 2:50 mark on Best of Youth, and a general disregard for extras of picture (don't even get me started in what happend to Hard Core Logo-full screen?!? ...Christ) . People there should really care about their movies more or get out of the buisness. Man, I sound bitter.

Masterpiece!,
By L. E Notkin - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Far Side of the Moon (DVD)
Let me first clarify that I am not francophone or the kind of person who watches artistic movies. Yet, this movie totally absorbed me and took me to a tremendous emotional and visual trip.I do not want to say much about this simple looking and yet intrically woven movie involving space travel, personal alienation, family love, dejection, and alien messages and yet full of humanity. I am speechless. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful

A creative marriage of art and philosophy.,
By Ann von Lossberg "movie maven" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Far Side of the Moon (DVD)
This movie is a gem. Almost flawless, you can feel that every detail has been tended to. From a great arm's length (the universe), it asks what we're meant to be doing on this ball that goes round and round. The cinematography constantly surprises, like stills in a photgraphic exhibit, and the score compliments beautifully. In the end, LePage concludes, all we have is art and poetry and love; these transcend the things that threaten to make us crazy.

Funny dream strory,

A movie is a funny story of a grown-up loser reaching the stars while in a boring job on the Earth.Perhaps, depicting a realistic role the USSR played in star exploration does not add stars from English-speaking viewers. |
