La Jetée, the legendary science-fiction film about time and memory after a nuclear apocalypse, was released in 1964 and is considered by many critics to be among the greatest experimental films ever made. (It provided the basis for the recent Terry Gilliam film 12 Monkeys.) Chris Marker, who is the undisputed master of the film essay, composed this post-apocalyptic story almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs. The story concerns an experiment in recovering and changing the past through the action of memory, yet the film can be read as a poem dominated by a single moving image, which in its context becomes one of the supreme moments in the history of film.

La Jetée is, to this day, a groundbreaking film experiment. Only 27 minutes long, it tells its intriguing story through dramatic black-and-white still photography. The book beautifully reproduces these images with accompanying English and French captions. See the film, and you will want this book.

This book takes the film shot by shot giving you clear images that you can't see on the vhs copies in release. This is the best way of taking a close look at the film that has inspired so many filmmakers over the years.

This is a beautiful reprinting of the still images that make up the film La Jetée. It also contains the English and French scripts in accompaniment. Unlike all the versions of the movie that I've seen, these images are clear and not washed out. Looking at the images in a book also allows you to really see the details and to pick out more information than watching the film.If I had a complaint, it's that sometimes instead of printing a full page image, the authors (editors?) would to put multiple small images on a page. Sometimes it's used to good effect (showing "movement" buy letting you see a sequence all at once) and sometimes it just makes you squint. 3 of 6 people found the following review helpful

Image and emotion move as you turn the pages. Marker's images are extraordianry in their power to evoke so much humanity in each still.
