Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

5.0 out of 5 stars Tips for next release Jan. 16 2008
By Tibbi
Format:DVD
Labyrinth is my favourite film of all time. I loved it when I watched it as a girl (albiet it scared the jeepers out of me) and I love it now years later.

This edition has quite a number of excellent special features. All the featurettes are excellent and are a half-hour or longer (where most DVDs have 15 segments). There is lots to learn about how the puppets were done, technical contruction, casting, writing, etc. Full of interesting tidbits for the die-hard Labyrinth fan.

The commentary with Brian Froud is entertaining and despite Froud having to carry the commentary by himself, he keeps the viewer engaged as he reminisces about the film and tells cute stories. Plus he has a very jovial voice and truly loved making the film, which helps alot.

My one critique is the lack of reflection from Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. Playing the two main characters (and certainly two very defining ones in my childhood) I was hoping for a commentary with the two of them. Sadly I was disappointed.

It would be BRILLIANT if in the next issue of this movie they included a commentary from them - together. I am eager to hear from both their perspectives on this AMAZING film.

And Sony, I PROMISE I will purchase the release! You have my word.

Beautiful film, beautiful transfer, excellent special features (though lacking Connelly and Bowie).

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless magic July 19 2004
Format:DVD
On its' release this little gem of a film was overlooked and not the hit it deserved to be.
The story centres around Sarah, a teenager, who resents her stepmother and Toby, her baby stepbrother and 'wishes' for the goblins to take him away. When they do Sarah finds herself journeying through the labyrinth of the goblin king (Bowie) in order to save him.
She befriends an assortment of creatures such as Hoggle, a grumpy dwarf type being and Ludo, a massive, hairy beast who has a gentle nature. They accompany and help Sarah on her way to the goblin king's castle where Toby is being held.
Jim Hensons workshop has worked it's usual magic and the film is littered with songs written and performed by David Bowie.
This film is pure entertainment for any age group, well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic yet Imaginative July 16 2004
By Pamela
Format:DVD
Rather than relying on modern cinematics and special effects, Labyrinth instead relies on the talent and imagination of it's creators. It combines the talents of Set Designer M.C. Eshcher, Producer and Director, the infamous Jim Henson, and of course, the talented fantasy artist and designer Brian Froud. This combination creates an absolutely fun, and magic filled journey through the naivete of childhood that can be shared by the young and old alike.
Jeniffer Conolly is superp as Sarah, and David Bowie even more superb as Jareth, The Goblin King. The casting couldn't have been more perfect, as both artists became legends in their own right in that their appeal has lasted through the decades, and so, has the film. It remains a cult classic.
If anything, the lack of special effects has made it's appeal even more undeniable, as it cannot be dated. Too many times has it occured with films that as speical effects develop, the films lose their appeal. As the film relies on the fantastic nature of not only the genre, but the spectacular muppetry, the film retains it's beauty, despite it's simplistic cinematics...
A must see for all lovers of the fantsy genre...and of course Jim Henson or David Bowie fans...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Labyrinth lives on Dec 14 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I was just a kid when this film came out. I used to love it for its great music and the imaginative sets, creatures etc. Now when I watch it I see the bildungsroman aspect of the work and I can appreciate it at a whole new level. This is one of those classics that will never die and can be appreciated by both young and old. I love it and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I <3 Bowie June 18 2004
Format:DVD
David Bowie as the Goblin King was truley magical, expessially because of how gorgeous he is and because of his charming wit. the music in the film is fantastic, i highly reccomend buying the soundtrack to this film as well. Jennifer Connoly plays Sara beautifully, and this edition is absolutley wonderful. it is the ultimate item to own for any fan. It also provides a MUCH clearer picture, compared to the original. The picture is much more sharp and looks like the film was made recently and not in the 80s. i would buy this in a second. 100% viewer satisfaction.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fairytale! June 13 2004
By Kate
Format:DVD
I just finished watching this movie about an hour ago, and I can't get over it! There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said, but I must emphasize how much I loved Bowie. People can think what they want, but I thought he was almost beautiful as the Goblin King. I would recomend this to anyone who loves fantasies and wants to get lost in a fun and sweet tale!

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Into My Labyrinth June 27 2004
By Cerelia
Format:DVD
The movie Labyrinth (staring David Bow and Jennifer Connelly.) Is the story of a spoiled teenage girl named Sarah Williams. Sarah makes a foolish wish. Of having Jareth, the Goblin King, take her baby brother away from her.
There are really only two plot lines in this story.
A) That Jareth has baby brother Toby and is keeping him in his castle. He wants to make him a goblin and withholds him there. Jareth is enjoying tormenting Sarah with his games and trick doors.
Nothing in Jareth's Labyrinth is what it seems.
When you think it's one thing. It's usually another. Jareth sends the dwarf Hoggel to trick Sarah, and have her take more time in solving his labyrinth.
Jareth has a middle calculative mind and likes beautiful things. Like crystals and parties.
He likes to play jokes on the mortals and is some what cruel to those around him the most.
The Goblin King is all so very arrogant and doesn't believe that Sarah will defeat him.
Jareth's feelings for Sarah are sometimes in question. Allot of fans believe that he was in love with her. However, it's so hard to say, because the story doesn't really grow. On Sarah and Jareth's feelings for each other.
There is one thing for sure though. That he enjoys to make her miserable. As she tries to get her brother back and defeat him.
B) Sarah Williams is more then frustrated with Jareth. She hats the fact that the fairy tale, that she loves. Is acutely real and Jareth took away her baby brother.
Now she she has to go through Jareth's long labyrinth, to save him.
In the movie Sarah wines allot and complains continually to Jareth and Hoggel.
However, as the movie moves along. Her character does progresses (if not slowly.) Sarah realizes how important friends are and that she has to decide about some important things.
