5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Baking Book Feb 15 2010
Format:Paperback
The recipes are great, and mostly accessible to the novice. The book is also an entertaining read. The stories and tips that accompany each recipe, and the images of pages from 1960's church fundraiser cookbooks, are more than enough to fill an afternoon of waiting for the oven timer to go off. I only wish her follow-up cookbook, "A Second Helping," was available through Amazon as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious Sep 23 2009

Well set out, easy to understand, lovely variety of goodies brings back memories of what mum and my mother-in law used to bake. Lots of extra notes and pictures. I had borrowed the book from my local library and after drooling over it I had to have my own copy.Delightful and inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to look at, read and try! July 16 2011

I bought this book while in NZ and have really enjoyed it. I think they like less salt than we do, so some of the recipes seem a bit bland for an American's taste. I find NZ cookery fascinating and really enjoyed reading the little stories. I also loved the "Getting Ready" sections. The author is very friendly and helpful if you need to email her a question or comment. I would highly recommend this book--also, check out her website and e-newsletter!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book, but Aug 17 2011

I was very excited to receive this book as a gift. Having spent some time in Australia as a child, I went to many afternoon teas. I have vivid memories of pikelets, biscuits, cakes, and other yummies set on a beautiful hand embroidered table cloth. With tons of enthusiasm I bought the supplies to cook my way through the book. I hadn't realized that just about all the measurements of ingredients need to be converted to American measurements from either ounces or grams. The author does offer some guidance about this in the first part of the book, however, this is not specific enough for the many different ingredients. I found a website that helps [...] but it was quite an effort. I made about 6 of the recipes so far. Some have turned out as pictured, some did not. I love this book just for the memories that it brings back to me, but if you decide to make the things in the recipes you will have to do your homework.
