Bradley's sensational Arthurian fantasy, The Mists of Avalon (1982), could never have a sequel, not if Bradley wanted to keep women's power as the main theme, because after Camelot, you will recall, things went steadily downhill. So she retreated and wrote The Forest House (1994), a prequel about the struggle between native Celts and invading Romans in Avalon's home world. This sequel to House and prequel to Mists is set close enough to Arthurian times for such important figures as Merlin and Vivianne to appear, yet far enough before them to allow Bradley's imagination ample scope. In it, three characters capable of reincarnation--a priestess, a mother, and a son--appear in similar relationships in episodes set at the turn of the first to the second century A.D., the end of the third century, and the middle of the fifth century. In each time, Avalon is threatened; the mystic isle survives, of course, but only through sacrifice. Bradley's women are, as usual, strong and vibrant, but never before has she so effectively depicted the heroic male. still quite good.

LADY OF AVALON does not have the same engaging quality of THE FOREST HOUSE and certainly lacks the grandeur of MISTS OF AVALON but is still a wonderful book.

LADY OF AVALON is three stories in one volume. The book opens shortly after the close of THE FOREST HOUSE. Caillean is now the Lady of Avalon in charge of the small surviving band of priestesses. Her story and that of Sianna who succeeds her tell of the establishment of Avalon. The second section is the story of Dierna and Teleri and the sacrifices they make for the Lady. The final section is the story of Ana and Vivanne which lays the groundwork for THE MISTS OF AVALON.

If you are a big fan of MISTS OF AVALON this is a must read but be aware that neither THE FOREST HOUSE nor this book quite live up to MISTS. In any event the stories are engaging on their own and this book could be enjoyed independantly of the others.

This is one of those books where I don't know what to think. When I got it I thought it would deal with the Arthurian legends at least in part. Instead I found that the book dealt with basically the same tale being told again and again. This is of course accomplished by means of reincarnation so that in each story the names of the characters change but not their basic role in the plot.

My Impression-I liked the stories on an individual level but when woven together the effect is not as grand as just taking the characters and stories one at a time. This book really peaked my interested and I will look into the others. If you like a good adventure story I suggest you do the same.
