While book 7 did not feel like a cliff-hanger, the new 8th book is an excellent continuation of the story. For those new to the series, it isn't necessary to read the first 6 (although I highly recommend it) but you should read book 7 before this one to fully understand what is happening.

After The Lord Protector's Daughter I didn't have to much hope of this book. But was I wrong, this book took off with adventure and ended with adventure. IF you liked the first trilogy you will like this book.Mykella has finally dealt justice to her uncle and cousin, now she must pull her country back from the horror of her way of dealing with them. Then she begins to find all the theft and injustice that are still rampant in Lanacrona. Many people are not ready for a just and decisive ruler. Many of the seltyrs and the factors will do anything to continue to strip Lanacrona of its wealth and power. Her sisters are not very supportive in a land that has very little use for women. Almost everyone has trouble believing this young small woman can take charge and enforce the laws and the rulings of the land. Her father allowed his brother to rule and make most of the laws of the country under the pretext that he was helping her father. Her father did not believe the many warnings about his brother's actions and rulings. Only Areyst is supportive, and he is now the leader of the army. Not only has her uncle stripped Lanacrona but he has left her with an army in need of training. Since that was not one of her uncle's ambitions for the country. Mykella will need all of her wits and Talent to overcome the dealings of her uncle and the ambitions of the seltyrs and factors left in Lanacrona. I found it wonderful and exciting. It is wonderful to find a strong woman character. After the previous novel set in this time I was delighted with this book. My only gripe is that they should have been one book. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful

Modesitt has a winner here. Only complaint is that you have to read the previous and somewhat inferior book, "The Lord-Protector's Daughter" (Corean Chronicles), in order to fully enjoy this one. If you have already read the previous book in this series, then this is a must read. I agree with an earlier review that they should have been one book. (Yes, I know you should italicize book titles but this doesn't seem to be an option Amazon gives it's reviewers.)

A woman for every job,
By Kevin Scott Brown - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Lady-Protector: The Eighth Book of the Corean Chronicles (Hardcover)
L. E. Modesitt, Jr., is one of the best, well-known, modern writers in this genre. His latest book is much like his other works. It is completely flawless in its design and character work. For those out there who have not read the eight previous books, this story might be a bit confusing for you. There is still plenty of excitement for regular folks in it, but knowing the other books will make the story more cohesive. The book does break down the plot at some points to give some important back history to the story, but overall this is a book for fans.My favorite thing about Modesitt's stories is his pacing. No modern writer out there is as good as he is at making his chapters flow so coherently. It is like a roller coaster for the eyes. I found this book to be one of the best in the Corean group so far. It is like a well-noted symphony as human emotion and dialogue fill the story with humor, romance and mystery pulling at the reader. It is also enjoyable to see the parallels of Mykella, the first Lady-Protector of Lanachrona, dealing with the social aspects of ruling as well as the political aspects. This is not a great book to start with if you know nothing about Modesitt's work, but it is a great part of the growing legacy. *Originally published for San Francisco/Sacramento Book Review* |
