The beautiful Isobel of Aberlady is coveted by many men for the power of her prophetic visions. Her father has kept Isobel isolated at Aberlady Castle for this very reason. But when he is taken prisoner in battle, Isobel must rely on her own resources to protect her besieged castle and its people. Just when all hope seems lost, James Lindsay, Scottish knight turned outlaw who's known throughout the land as the Border Hawk, scales the high castle walls to save her. Isobel obeys the counsel of her guards and escapes with James, certain that he will deliver her safely to her betrothed, Sir Ralph Leslie.

But James has other plans. Leslie is his sworn enemy, and her betrothed has taken James's cousin hostage. Isobel discovers that she has exchanged the threat of capture by the English king for kidnapping by the legendary Border Hawk--an outlaw that her own prophecies branded a traitor to her beloved Scotland.

When James's plan for a swift trade of Isobel for his cousin go awry, the unlikely pair retreat to a forest stronghold, where the hardened warrior finds the lure of the gentle lady more than he can deny. The obstacles that lie between the two and happiness are many, including their own honor, loyalty, and sworn vows. If the strength of his sword arm can't save her, can the Border Hawk use his wits to gain his beloved Isobel? Laird of the Wind is a mythical tale rich with descriptive detail, memorable characters, and an ending that will take readers by surprise. Move over Robin Hood, it's time to share shelf space with another outlaw of the forest. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Library Journal

Branded an outlaw and a murderer by Black Isobel's prophecies, James Lindsay sets out to kidnap the seeress and use her to barter for his cousin Margaret's freedom; but the gentle, beautiful Isobel is not the evil hag he had expected, and Jamie finds that letting her go is far more difficult than capturing her had been. King spins a complex, mesmerizing story of betrayal, retribution, and healing that weaves intricate details of falconry and politics with a lyrical, compelling love story that will appeal to readers who identify with Scotland's struggle for independence, in particular the period just following the death of William Wallace in 1305. King's (Lady Miracle, Topaz, 1997) exquisitely vivid descriptions are beautiful bonuses. King lives in Damascus, MD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another outstanding tale from King, Dec 11 2003

I loved Angel Knight, Raven's Moon and Heather Moon, so I was delighted when King continued her fine, deft hand with another Scottish Tale.

Isobel of Aberlady was born with the "sight" and she has seen visions of a dark knight who comes to besiege her castle, both a rescuer and kidnapper! James Lindsay was a Scottish Noble, but has been outlawed, accused of betraying his leader. James is determined to win his good name back, and he sees Isobel as a weapon to get his justice. James intends on using Isobel to gain the freedom of his cousin. Only plans go awry and they must take to the forrest to escape their enemies.

Ah, I wonder if a wee bit of James Douglas is not the basis for this James, for all the dashing and legend of the Black Douglas rests easily on the mantle of King's character.

King is unsurpassed in her skill to weave a true Scottish tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful storytelling, touching characters, July 25 2001

As a huge fan of Scottish history, I was so happy to discover Susan King late last year. This is the second of her novels I have read and I think it's a wonderful combination of Scottish history, a complicated relationship, and a bit of the paranormal with Isabel's visions. Both Isabel and Jamie are complex characters and there is an interesting development in their relationship -- from captor and captive to friends to lovers. Even though at one point he takes the role of her captor, Jamie never treats Isabel badly or loses respect for her. And in an odd way he sets her free. I always learn something new with King's novels and the descriptions of falconry here are fascinating. Love scenes don't come until very late in the book and they are sensual and lovely. This is a thinking person's romance...I recommend it and all of her other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book!, Mar 23 2000
This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
A friend recommended Susan King's books to me, and now I'm reading everything she has written so far! LAIRD OF THE WIND is one of the best romances that I have read in ages, and a great Scottish romance. Susan King writes beautiful prose that pulls you into the story, and her history is always accurate. The characters are wonderful in this one. Jamie Lindsay is a warm, wise hero, with dark secrets that haunt him. He is always good to the heroine, and even when the tension is high between them and he loses patience with her, or thinks she has betrayed him, he is never unkind or selfish, and always strong. The goshawk is great in this, very different! The way its training is woven into the story is fascinating. The goshawk helps to bring the hero and heroine together, and it is all very believable. I loved the movie "Braveheart", and this is a MUST READ for anyone who loved that movie. Susan King takes the story of Wallace just a little farther just when you thought it was over. This is an amazing and wonderful book and my favorite of this author's books so far!(I am going to read her newest soon.) If you want an in-depth and satisfying story with accurate history and deep emotions and wonderful characters, you will love this book.
