From Amazon.com

While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely blasphemy to some, but to others it's a coming-of-age story of the highest order.

Joshua (a.k.a. Jesus) knows he is unique and quite alone in his calling, but what exactly does his Father want of him? Taking liberties with ancient history, Moore works up an adventure tale as Biff and Joshua seek out the three wise men so that Joshua can better understand what he is supposed to do as Messiah. Biff, a capable sinner, tags along and gives Joshua ample opportunities to know the failings and weaknesses of being truly human. With a wit similar to Douglas Adams, Moore pulls no punches: a young Biff has the hots for Joshua's mom, Mary, which doesn't amuse Josh much: "Don't let anyone ever tell you that the Prince of Peace never struck anyone." And the origin of the Easter Bunny is explained as a drunken Jesus gushes his affection for bunnies, declaring, "Henceforth and from now on, I decree that whenever something bad happens to me, there shall be bunnies around."

One small problem with the narrative is that Biff and Joshua often do not have distinct voices. A larger difficulty is that as the tone becomes more somber with Joshua's life drawing to its inevitable close, the one-liners, though not as numerous, seem forced. True to form, Lamb keeps the story of Joshua light, even after its darkest moments. --Michael Ferch --Ce texte provient d'une édition qui n'est plus publiée ou qui est non diponible.

From Publishers Weekly

A childhood pal of the savior is brought back from the dead to fill in the missing 30-year "gap" in the Gospels in Moore's latest, an over-the-top festival of sophomoric humor that stretches a very thin though entertaining conceit far past the breaking point. The action starts in modern America, specifically in a room at the Hyatt in St. Louis, where the angel who shepherds "Levi who is called Biff" has to put Christ's outrageous sidekick under de facto house arrest to get him to complete his task. Moore (Bloodsucking Fiends) gets style points for his wild imagination as Biff recalls his journey with Jesus dubbed Joshua here according to the Greek translation into and out of the clutches of Balthasar, then into a Buddhist monastery in China and finally off to India, where they dabble in the spiritual and erotic aspects of Hinduism. The author gets more serious in his climax, offering a relatively straightforward, heartfelt account of the Passion and Christ's final days that includes an intriguing spin on how the Resurrection might have happened. The Buddhist and Hindu subplots seem designed to point out the absurdity and excesses of religious customs, but none of the characters are especially memorable, and eventually both plot and characters give way to Biff's nightclub patter. As imaginative as some of this material is, the sacrilegious aspects are far less offensive than Moore's inability to rein in his relentless desire to titillate, and his penchant for ribald, frat-boy humor becomes more annoying as the book progresses. Moore has tapped into organized religion for laughs before, but this isn't one of his better efforts. Agent, Nick Ellison. Author tour.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A Great Impulse Buy -- I'll Admit It!, Jui 19 2005
This book turned out to be one of the best impulse buys of my life. It is a hilarious look at how the first 30 years of Jesus' life might have happened. The three main characters, Joshua (Jesus), Biff, and Maggie (Mary Magdelene) are very well thought out and presented to us in a way that is both laugh-out-loud hysterical and believable at the same time.

Many have said that faithful Christians might have a hard time accepting this book. Many of us do have open minds though. As one of those faithful Christians I believe that Christopher Moore did a wonderful job of presenting Jesus' human side without belittling his divinity at all.

I only have a few minor complaints. Moore spends the first two thirds of the book building out a relationship between Biff and the angel, Raziel. Then in the last third no more is mentioned of this relationship.

Secondly, I don't think that having Joshua curse at times in the book helped out any. I think he could have been just as effective and funny without the language. Besides, Biff cursed enough for the two of them.

Finally, the ending was much more bittersweet and serious than the rest of the book. I suppose this isn't a problem though because as much as it bothered me It has made it impossible for me to get the book out of my mind. Something tells me that is exactly what Christopher Moore intended. Buy this book! You'll truly enjoy it. I'd also like to recommend another Amazon quick pick: "The Losers' Club: Complete Restored Edition" by Richard Perez, another book I can't stop thinking about.

4.0étoiles sur 5 The "Judo" joke is worth 4 stars by itself, Aoû 9 2007

I dug it.
That's the long and short of it.
I've read Moore before (I think it was Island of the Sequined Love Nun) and don't remember being thrilled, but when I saw this title I thought it'd be something that a fairly sacrilegious guy like me would enjoy.

I really thought the premise was great - that for all those "missing" years of Jesus's life, he was out tracking down the three wise men who had attended his birth, finding them in far flung places like India and China. Along the way he learns various practices and philosophies that he will later use in his teachings. That is a great idea for a novel about Jesus, and I think Moore does a good job keeping the journeys interesting.

The characters are pretty good. Biff - the narrator - has a bit of Tom Sawyer/Eddie Haskell (sp?) about him, and is consistently funny I think. And Jesus is pretty strong as well. Basically portrayed as this kid who knows that he is the Christ, but is pretty confused about what he is supposed to be doing, and generally disgruntled because he's been told (by an angel) that he isn't supposed to be having sex.

There are next to no "laugh out loud" moments in the book, but it is pretty amusing the whole way through, mainly due to the "Little Rascals" narrative voice that Biff uses. It's also a pretty compelling read. I zoomed through it like you do a thriller novel, and even at the end, when the plot has returned to material you're familiar with from the Bible, Moore has put such a spin on the world and the material that you're curious about how he's going to have the end of Jesus's life play out.

So it's a light read, but it is indeed funny and a good page-turner. And it is definitely a fresh and wacky take on some pretty well-worn material.

5.0étoiles sur 5 omg where to start, Déc 27 2009
If taken in the context in which it was written (humor, fiction) then this book is one of the best books I have read in a long time and I am an avid reader. This is the first book I have read by this author and it was reccommended to me by a friend.. I thank her ! There were several times while reading this book where I literally laughed out loud and yet you can tell the author spent quite some time on research into the era and times of christ. the attention to detail in the main characters and the thought put into their personalities is amazing! I will certainly be looking for other books from this author
