Land Girls, a popular series from the BBC, follows four members of the Women's Land Army--women who worked on British farms during World War II for the war effort. Nancy (Summer Strallen), Joyce (Becci Gemmell), Bea (Jo Woodcock), and Annie (Christine Bottomley, The Street) find their lives turned upside down by their experiences--including pregnancy, adultery, losing a husband, suspicion of collaboration, racial strife, class schisms, and more--at Pasture Farm. Rattling off the story elements like that makes Land Girls sound by-the-numbers, but that's far from the case--though the subplots may seem familiar to any war-on-the-home-front tale, the treatment is intelligent, compassionate, and wonderfully acted. The central and supporting characters are skillfully drawn and vivid, while the script never gets mired in sentiment--for any moment that may feel a little pat, there's another that's bittersweet and rich with the contradictions of life. Particularly strong performances include Danny Webb (Alien 3) as a Home Guard sergeant whose patriotism sours into paranoia, Nathaniel Parker as the gracious but weak-willed lord of the farm manor, and Susan Cookson as a matron forced to betray the girls' privacy. All in all, a warm, compelling drama. --Bret Fetzer

3.0 out of 5 stars Wartime soap, Oct 14 2010

This review is from: Land Girls (DVD)
This is a well intentioned period drama about WWII Britain. Four young women, members of The Women's Land Army, or Land Girls, arrive at their assigned agrarian post in southern England unprepared for the rigours, dirt and discipline. The Lord and Lady of a nearby manor house, in a joyless marriage, soon play integral roles in the life of one Land Girl and a paranoid and vindictive Home Guard Sergeant stirs the pot for the others.

Actresses have roles which amplify their feminine charm, wiles, sisterly solidarity and overall superior intelligence as compared with the male actors whose roles provide them little opportunity to display admirable qualities (an exception being Billy, the farmer's son). Military men are not put in a good light. Only the fifth episode provides real emotional drama.

For foreign viewers (the non-British) the biggest problem with this series is that the dialect and intonation is sometimes difficult to interpret. It makes it even more difficult when the actresses speak with soft voices and are mumbling or whispering to each other. The background music is often much too loud, almost drowning out what is being said. Unfortunately subtitles are not offered on the discs. I give very low marks for the audio production.

The acting is quite good and the photography is excellent. For authenticity it is not realistic that the girls hardly get their overalls dirty, or that blackout rules for vehicles and buildings don't seem to apply, or that some uniforms are incorrect, or that church bells are rung when they were only supposed to be used to signal an invasion. Overall I rate this production three stars. With better sound management or available subtitles I would have given four.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Mar 10 2011
This review is from: Land Girls (DVD)
I adored this mini-series. I don't know alot about Land Girls so I can't say if it was accurate. I am not British and I had no problemm understanding what the actors were saying. I also did not think the music got too loud. I am a big fan of Summer Strallen so I thought I would buy this movie. It was totally worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Land Girls DVD #1, Jan 23 2012
This review is from: Land Girls (DVD)
The "Land Girls DVD" was a delightful link to a war time necesity to allow farms to continue to produce the products required to sustain Britian at war. During this time the majority of young men were of course were on active duty during and for a time after the war. My wife born after the war was intriged with the Land Girls concept and realy wanted to become one. Unfortuatly they were disbanded before she had the opportunity to actualy become one.I would strongly recommend this DVD and will shortly look to purchasing series 2 of The Land GirlsLand Girls
