5.0 out of 5 stars LAND OF LOOK BEHIND, a must see, Jan 19 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Land of Look Behind (VHS Tape)
Growing up in a culture where the names Bob Marley and rastafaria typically represent only Popstardom and illegal ganja use, I went into viewing this movie expecting to see, once again, that portayal. I came out refreshed, with a different and more far-reaching understanding of the Rastafarian culture and the essence of Marley's music. To view LAND OF LOOK BEHIND is to peer into the depths of Look Behind's (Jamaica's) interior, to bypass the facades of tourism and pop, to see a people, their history, their prospects of a future. The message, wisdom and influence of Marley's music has never been so profoundly captured on film as it has in LAND OF LOOK BEHIND. It is a must for any Marley fan, as well as anyone at all interested in filmed documentaries. Indeed, it is a gem among stones.

5.0 out of 5 stars An undiscovered masterwork that redefines documentary film, Jan 8 1999

This feature film, made for $9200 (including kidnapping ransom paid to the crew's Castro-backed captors), is the finest non-fiction film to be found on the subject of Rastafarianism and reggae, and a monument in the history of documentary filmmaking. First-time director Alan Greenberg, a Werner Herzog protege, has invented an amalgam of dramatic and field technique with breathtaking results--the master documentarian Herzog, in fact, has called "Land of Look Behind" the documentary film that has influenced him more than any other over the last 20 years. The images and characters are unforgettable, the reggae performances by Gregory Issaacs and Lui Lepki genuinely hypnotic, the original non-reggae scoring sublime. Winner of the Chicago International Film Festival's Gold Hugo Award. An essential film for any serious filmgoer, filmmaker, musician, musicologist and anthropologist, as well as for fans of reggae and pop culture. Do not miss this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic picture of early 80's Jamaica, Sep 7 2006

This is one of my favorite documentaries, and I'm so happy that Ryko has released it on DVD. The back story that I heard from friends about this film--and I'll admit I don't know if it's true--is that a group of German filmmakers arrived in Jamaica to make a documentary about life in the Jamaican countryside. But shortly after they arrived there and began filming, Bob Marley passed away and life-as-usual in Jamaica came to a screeching halt. The film then bacame a meditation on the life of the Jamaican sufferer and, indirectly, an homage to the life of Bob Marley. If you're looking for star-power or hot reggae musical performances, this may not be the movie for you. Apart from a live Gregory Isaacs song paying tribute to Marley, there isn't much live music. What this film does have is a lot of very poor, very honest and well-spoken Jamaican people talking about their philosophies of life, their religion, and their hardships. This film contains some great cinematography of both the Jamaican countryside and Kingston. But what really makes it unique is the filmmakers willingness to put a microphone in front of a lot of people that aren't usually heard and just let the cameras roll.

As an aside, the film also contains an interesting segment with Mutabaruka.
