DISCLAIMER: I never saw the original TV series that this movie is based upon though I know a bit about it. I can only judge this movie standing on its own, as a movie. Read on.
Land Of The Lost is one of those movies where the funniest scene is in the trailer: Will Ferrell gets stung in the back by a crazy gigantic insect and it leaves a welt the size of a basketball. The rest of the film has funny moments, but nothing like that, and you just keep waiting for the movie to get going...and waiting...and waiting....
Rick Marshall, who believes in time warps, is sucked into a strange world where people and objects from all sorts of different times and places merge. With him are Will (the awesome Danny McBride) and Holly (Anna Friel), and they soon befriend the very hairy Chaka. These four quest around this strange land, trying to find their way back home. Their quest is complicated by the Steestaks and a tyranosaurus with a grudge.
CGI effects are decent, and intentionally cartoony. I did not mind this cartoony-ness, although some might. The problem with this film is certainly not the effects, which are present in just about every frame, but with the unfunny script. With guys like Ferrell and McBride aboard, laughs are guaranteed, so when the movie never picks up speed you really have the blame the script.
I enjoyed Leonard Nimoy's cameo, I enjoyed the battles with the dinosaurs (imagine a cheesier, kiddie version of King Kong), and I always enjoy Will Ferrell. I just wish I didn't spend $25 on this movie. It's a rental. That's about it. It's not really even the kind of movie you can watch with your kids due to profanity and so on.
DVD special features are nothing special and didn't help me appreciate the source material at all or enlighten me to the original TV show. Oh well.
As I say, buyer beware. This is a rental. I give it 2 stars because it did have its moments, it wasn't a total waste of time, but I think I'll sell it to a second hand store rather than watch again.
