2.0 out of 5 stars This movie is lost Nov 17 2009

Format:DVD
DISCLAIMER: I never saw the original TV series that this movie is based upon though I know a bit about it. I can only judge this movie standing on its own, as a movie. Read on.

Land Of The Lost is one of those movies where the funniest scene is in the trailer: Will Ferrell gets stung in the back by a crazy gigantic insect and it leaves a welt the size of a basketball. The rest of the film has funny moments, but nothing like that, and you just keep waiting for the movie to get going...and waiting...and waiting....

Rick Marshall, who believes in time warps, is sucked into a strange world where people and objects from all sorts of different times and places merge. With him are Will (the awesome Danny McBride) and Holly (Anna Friel), and they soon befriend the very hairy Chaka. These four quest around this strange land, trying to find their way back home. Their quest is complicated by the Steestaks and a tyranosaurus with a grudge.

CGI effects are decent, and intentionally cartoony. I did not mind this cartoony-ness, although some might. The problem with this film is certainly not the effects, which are present in just about every frame, but with the unfunny script. With guys like Ferrell and McBride aboard, laughs are guaranteed, so when the movie never picks up speed you really have the blame the script.

I enjoyed Leonard Nimoy's cameo, I enjoyed the battles with the dinosaurs (imagine a cheesier, kiddie version of King Kong), and I always enjoy Will Ferrell. I just wish I didn't spend $25 on this movie. It's a rental. That's about it. It's not really even the kind of movie you can watch with your kids due to profanity and so on.

DVD special features are nothing special and didn't help me appreciate the source material at all or enlighten me to the original TV show. Oh well.

As I say, buyer beware. This is a rental. I give it 2 stars because it did have its moments, it wasn't a total waste of time, but I think I'll sell it to a second hand store rather than watch again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gary Zukav physics applied Oct 25 2010

Where in the world is Matt Lauer? Actually Mat is the greatest actor in the film; Mat plays himself and adds credibility to the story.

Even though this film follows the general lost world formula it is unique and does not try to copy those films that have come before it. Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) has a parallel world theory that might supply us with the energy we need in this energy strapped world. This theory lands him a job as a La Brea Tar Pits science teacher. Enter cute freckle faced Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel) who shows proof that his theory is a reality. Together they venture in this world. Together they overcome great odds which include dinosaurs and skullduggery. Will they be able to return together?

The film is quite fun, tongue-in-cheek, and very handy; and watch where they place their handy's.
If you listen closely The Zarn (voice) is Leonard Nimoy from the movie "Them!"

I only saw the Blu-Ray version so I cannot compare media. However this is not just another tachyon film.
There are some voiceover extras including a food diary.

Caveman ~ Ringo Starr

3.0 out of 5 stars Steven Speilberg should direct the movie Aug 5 2010
Format:Blu-ray
This movie could have been better if Steven Spielberg directed Land of the Lost like he directed Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Even though this is a box office flop, which is why Steven Spielberg should direct Land of the Lost. Even I think Brendan Frasier should play Dr Rick Marshall and not William Ferrel. Brendan Frasier did very well with Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan should be in Land of the Lost and not Will Ferrell which is what he deserves a razzie award because he is not the right actor to play Dr Rick Marshall.
