A great little dictionary May 9 2011
By Narton - Published on

I am a first year student of Russian, and my professor recommended this pocket dictionary to me. The feature I like the best is that in each entry the root of the word is distinguished from the rest, and the entry itself will then specify other endings to the same root, making looking up closely related words very quick. It's not the smallest pocket dictionary, but it has good word coverage and it's definitely faster to look up words in this one than in my non-pocket dictionary. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a faster lookup of Russian words with impressive (though not perfect) coverage.

Best little dictionary Feb. 10 2013

At first I find this little thing no more useful than any other English-Russian dictionary other than being almost truly pocket-sized. But then... then I realized it can help me learn how to conjugate and decline almost everything! This is proving to be a real help and I don't even use all it's features yet (still learning how haha) but it has been invaluable to date.

Langensscheidt dictionary May 2 2011

Great, easy to read, and English words have the universal pronunciation guide also. This makes it a great choice for English learners.

com but this mini-version is useful when you happen not to be online Oct. 6 2015

This 600-page pocket dictionary is a handy reference. There are online Russian dictionaries such as but this mini-version is useful when you happen not to be online. The quality of the cover and the binding is high and the dictionary itself is a slick professional achievement as one might expect from Langenscheidt.

The cover is 4 by 6 inches and the thickness is 1 inch, so calling it a pocket dictionary may be a stretch. I have a Sanseido English-Japanese dictionary containing 1000 pages that measures 2.5 by 4.25 by 0.75 inches; now that's what I call a pocket dictionary!

The back cover of the Langenscheidt says that it contains about 45,000 references. Technically that may be correct but the primary listings are about 10,000 words from Russian to English and 10,000 more from English to Russian. Therefore this is not a comprehensive dictionary (how could it be?) but it contains most of the words that I would ever want to look up. A useful feature is that Russian verbs are numbered from 1 to 28 to identify their conjugation pattern as described in the Appendix. A similar system is used to specify the declensions of nouns and adjectives.
Helpful but not "gospel" April 28 2015

No dictionary is perfect, and this is no exception. I used this dictionary in conjunction with at least four other to translate from Russian to English. Without knowing root words, and not having variations of others immediately available, it is sometimes hard to find the word I am looking for. Using multiple resources, including this one, I am able to get close enough.
