"Word Nerd" Robyn Matthew is the CEO of Word Nerd Language and Educational Services Ltd., an educational service provider and publisher specializing in foreign languages. She also works as a contributor to the Collins Dictionary and as an evaluator of the grade 12 French provincial exams for the Ministry of Education. Her past pursuits include being a bilingual columnist for a multicultural newspaper and ESL teacher.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Publishing from Simon Fraser University. She now divides her time between her hometown of Vancouver and France where she lived for two years. She found success learning foreign languages as an adult.

A unique resource that pulls together all kinds of principles--along with hugely practical tips--about learning a new language as an adult.Robyn Matthew, a self-professed "Word Nerd," knows plenty about this process, both from her own experience and from the literature of the language-learning field. She shares it all - peppered with references from popular culture, such as scenes from movies and TV shows - in a relaxed, folksy style. The professional editor in me ground her teeth at the numerous punctuation and usage errors (e.g., "putting on the breaks in a fast conversation") that abounded in this book, but I learned a lot from it, and now feel inspired to pursue a longstanding goal of truly becoming fluent in another language.

I am a recently graduated language teacher and bought this book after reading a glowing review and thinking that it would be a helpful resource for me. I couldn't have been more wrong. Sorry Robyn, maybe you're a great teacher, but your book is nothing more than a "how to in 10 easy steps" list. You offer limited (non-obvious) concrete advice and repeat yourself so often that the 364 pages could be easily condensed to about 10. Your incredibly obvious tips are condescending and your ubiquitous references to Hollywood movies is obnoxious ( not to mention lowers your credibility as a language expert)! This books will join others in my give away box.
