I bought this because it would only cost me around $11 after tax, and it qualified my order for super-saver shipping. Also, one of the reviews seemed to imply that the pages would lie flat, which they do not; so much do they curve that the curvature of the paper on the previous page casts a shadow on the page you are sketching on, and interferes with the lighting (even when it's not threatening to close on your hand.)
Still, an artist knows what to do in these situations: Break the spine of the book and flatten it yourself. It is first and foremost your canvas, and only secondarily a book, so while I have the utmost respect for books, this one won't do an adequate job without first being broken to the task.
The paper is very white and very smooth...too smooth, in fact to get a proper 'bite' with the pencil. It's so smooth that it reflects light to a degree that I don't believe paper should. It is bleached to the unnatural degree that rice and bread and teeth are nowadays bleached, leaving no chance that you are left with anything with a hint of the natural.
However, even if nothing in this review finds favour with you, please know you can sketch in this sketchbook. In fact, one day you might want to do a sketch or two on this exact kind of paper, because it suites you. A blank page is never a bad thing to turn to after all.

For Masterpieces and Memories!

I bought this sketchbook as a gift for my brother who is an artist. I know how picky he is, so I searched throuth many before deciding on this one. Here's why:
The Sketchbook has a thick black cover that lies flat on page one or page 176 when opened. This is PERFECT for him, because he is LEFT HANDED. No wire bound or spiral bound notebooks to worry about. This leaves the smoothest drawing surface possible.
There are a good number of blank pages in this book. One Hundred Seventy-Six to be exact! All in ONE book for ONE low price here at Amazon.
Also, the pieces of paper are high quality pages. (Thick and Strong). He's not easily worried about tears. Another upside of this is that you can erase all you'd like and not worry about creating a hole, or tearing the page in half.
Don't you hate when you have a conpleted book of art, you put it away and then a couple of years later, you're looking for a specific drawing. When you take it out, you're disappointed because the page has yellowed like an old newspaper in the sun. Well, NOT with this paper. It's Ph levels are guaranteed not to show this fault.
I know he's used pencil, (colored and lead), chalk, ink and charcoal as well. This paper is even strong enough for watercolors! The Prismacolor Pencils work great with this blank book.
All in all this book has many uses and doesn't disappoint! I highly recommend this to the artist in the family or your little up-and-coming artist that loves to finger paint! It's a nice size with thick paper and absolutely built to last!

The pH neutral pages are supposed to never turn yellow, so that's the best thing about the sketchbook. I have a few artist sketches in my book and an artist commented that it was a really nice sketchbook. As the prior review mentioned, I'm not sure about the book binding, but hope it will last for many years. I'm not sure about the number of pages 176 or 224, but it would be nice if it was shown on the sketchbook cover. All in all, I like it.

I've used these sketchbooks as journals for years.
The paper quality is good however, the page count has dropped from 224 pages to 176 pages and I have found the binding is more likely to break with time.
