Good adaptation of the Flora Thompson stories. The screen writers have captured the feeling of the books very well, the humor, drama, and the acting is excellent. As usual the BBC has done an outstanding job on the period costumes and capturing the Victorian era with the transition from manual labour to mechanization and from a farming based economy to a manufacturing based one. The stories are about the people and their relationships, lower class versus upper class, country versus town, old versus new, single versus married. Each season of this series can stand alone, but the complete season is an excellent buy if you enjoy costume drama.

This is yet another gem of a production from the BBC. The series, which is based on Flora Thomson's literary works is tenderly adapted to the screen, and succeeds in creating a microcosm of the dramatic social changes that are imminent in turn of the century England. The series serves as a commentary on the secularization of social life - with the post office supplanting the role of the church and the manor - allowing for the gentry and common folk to mingle freely...

The production itself is adorned with a magnificent cast, very strong design and excellent directorial skills from a few emerging and established names. The transition from town to country is also beautifully rendered through the cinematographers painterly brush - impressionistic imagery of the houses of country folk is delicately juxtaposed to the richness and splendour of the manor and other wealthier homes. New values of individualism and enterprise are also shot by opening up new spaces on the landscape (such as the establishment of "Bell Tower" and the "Golden Lion Hotel") and the never changing hamlet of "Lark Rise" which continues to survive in grinding poverty and hardship.

A fabulous series which deserves to be seen for anyone who appreciates good storytelling and well made television.

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Filled with endearing characters, laughter, sentiment, joys, and pitffalls experienced by the people of a small hamlet (Lark Rise) and a nearby town (Candleford). The setting is the late 19th century. I am very partial to period British dramas and find this series very enjoyable.

This was delightful, well written and well acted!! I am so very sorry, as others have said, that there is not more to the series! I purchased this series to fill some long hours for an ill friend. She loved it and so do I. It can be viewed over again finding things you missed in the first go around. If you enjoy British drama....then I am confident you are going to thoroughly enjoy Lark Rise to Candleford!!!

Lark Rise to Candleford is one of those movies you just hate to see come to an end. The pace of this movie,
the scenes, the music, the costumes and the actors bring together a wonderful story of days gone by. Giving
this movie 5 stars is no exaggeration, we are only sorry the series has been discontinued.

This collection was such a good deal that I bought it for us and gave the four DVDs we already had to a friend. Lark Rise is among our favourite movies. Great entertainment for the whole family. Superb acting. Wonderful nostalgia reminding us of a time when life was simpler, and in some ways, less stressful. I highly recommend this collection for those who appreciate terrific BBC movies.

I purchased the entire 4 seasons in this boxed set and watched them all within 2 weeks. I did enjoy them, however there are definite issues that I did not like. Firstly for anyone wanting to know about the box itself, it is fine what you see in the picture is what you get. The four seasons are each in their own DVD cases, however, so if you already own the DVDs I don't see the need for this boxed set. Now with regard to content, I had never seen an episode before I purchased this and maybe seeing them one after the next instead of having yearly intervals has made a difference for me. I found it somewhat repetitive, sometimes in a good way (simple country living) sometimes in an annoying way (love interests that go nowhere) and the final season's ending felt forced and contrived at times. What the show does well is an interesting development of characters and relationships between the village of Lark Rise and the town of Candleford and the issues that made up daily living for ordinary people. The drama of the show is mostly centred on romance and the thwarting of romance. It is a great watch if one likes romance and its various entanglements as the main plot of a series. However for me it was just ok. The main characters became a bit annoying in their self righteousness at times as well, though only at times, mostly they were quite likable. The costumes and setting were quite good. All in all a decent watch.
