The Real Girl is the Real Deal,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: NEW Lars & The Real Girl (DVD) (DVD)
Willing suspension of disbelief - if you aren't prepared to do so, don't buy this DVD. But if you are, you will be rewarded. Ryan Gosling gives an exceptional performance as Lars, and his struggles evoke equal measures of humour and pathos. By and large his supporting cast manage to keep up. Patricia Clarkson in particular does a nice job as the doctor who helps him and who in some sense is helped by him. Paul Schneider as Lars' brother Gus is equally believable, and in general Kelli Garner hits the right cords as Lars' eventual love interest. The premise shouldn't work but it does.

This review is from: Lars and the Real Girl Bilingual (DVD)
This was one of the best movies I have seen this year. On the cover it says it's a comedy and while there aare many funny moments it is also very sweet and not necessarily meant for you to be laughing your backside off the whole time.I was a little wary of the film because it seemed like a very strange idea but they really pulled if off. The story is about a man named Lars who is introverted, quiet and lives in a shed in his brother's yard. His sister in law is always worrying about him and encourages him to be more social and come over for dinner but he prefers his own company. One day he tells the family he's bringing a girl to dinner and they get all excited because this is very new behaviour for him. When he shows up with a very well endowed sex doll named Bianca (who's half Braziilian and half Danish might I add), they don't know how to react. Soon he's the talk of the town and a very sweet but funny story unfolds.

This review is from: Lars and the Real Girl Bilingual (DVD)
I had heard great things about this movie from several people before we saw it, so my expectations were high and thankfully I was not disappointed. This is truly one of the best movies I've seen over the last couple of years. The beauty of the movie is the way this small town - where everyone knows everyone else - is lovingly shown to us, and how all these people are worrying about Lars and what seems to be his descent into depression or mental illness. When he starts finding himself with the help of the "real girl" it isn't so much Lars we're entranced by, but rather the open and welcoming reaction of all his friends and neighbours to this very strange relationship he's having. Sit down with this movie and don't expect fireworks, but do expect to be drawn into a great story with wonderful characters and to be taken on a very emotional ride.
