Review

Russell artfully lets Winstons own words paint Winston as a bit self-righteous, prickly, and less discerning than Winston believes himself to be. (Publishers Weekly(Jan.))

Last Dance is a well written mystery. But it is more than that. It is a story about searching for a life that can sustain the soul regardless of how uphill the battle should be. (Hamilton Spectator 2012-02-04)

This is a solid mystery with a sad message: Hate does kill. (The Globe and Mail 2012-02-16)

It was a book that I wanted to discuss with others and see what they thought about it. This would be an excellent book for a book club. (Examiner.com 2012-02-15)

The first-person narrative, realistic dialogue and accessible cast create an engaging intimacy to this fast-paced social commentary. (The Winnipeg Free Press 2012-03-10)

deftly wraps a contentious issue inside a complex and revealing, burtal but also witty, bubble of crime. (The Toronto Sun 2012-03-11)

Russell has created some interesting characters and set them solidly in todays Vancouver. (The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix 2012-04-13)

The witty narration of the central character, Winston Patrick, an ex-lawyer turned high school teacher with self esteem issues, makes this second murder mystery from the author David Russell an entertaining read. A simple case of gay discrimination takes some complex turns as the reluctant sleuth is drawn once again into a criminal investigation. As a west coast reader, I enjoyed how the city of Vancouver plays a major role in the plot, its neighbourhoods and diverse culture providing a colourful backdrop for the comic and tragic events of the story.
