This is one of the great underrated films of the '70s: a bitchy Hollywood whodunit and a clever parlor game (cowritten by Anthony Perkins and Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim). Several celebrity chums are invited aboard prankster James Coburn's yacht for a cruel game of "guess the deep, dark secret." Everyone has one; but naturally some are more wicked than others. Richard Benjamin, James Mason, Dyan Cannon, Joan Hackett, Raquel Welch, and Ian McShane are the odd cast of participants. However, the stakes are unexpectedly raised when murder gets added to the not-so-fun agenda. Plenty of inside jokes and red herrings in this nasty and unforgettable film. It's just what you'd expect from the twisted minds of Perkins and Sondheim. --Bill Desowitz

1.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Versions? July 14 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The one star is for the dvd. This 'version' as I've read in the other reviews *IS NOT* the same as the VHS that I own. There is a HUGE flaw in Chapter 18 as the Michigan viewer stated. I am not entirely satisfied as others are with this mess.

I bought my VHS from Amazon two years ago and my tape *do not* have the Chapter 18 mistake in it. So, there must be two versions - one mastered correctly and the mess with the mistake in Chapter 18. Warners needs to re-do this dvd without the mistakes that currently exists in this DVD.

A great movie done an injustice.

1.0 out of 5 stars What Happened? April 26 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The Last of Sheila is excellent and I am in full agreement with all reviews written herein.

The one star is for the DVD release. One, the release is NOT the 'same' movie released on VHS. This DVD release looks like someone at Warners took the 'outtakes' and pieced together a slightly different movie. For instance in Chapter 18 there are two huge silhouettes in the frame of the movie. What it turns out to be is the director sitting in a chair with his hand on his jaw watching the actors act and the boom or lighting person moving around the frame. How the heck did this big blooper happen - on the DVD? This MISTAKE certainly isn't on the VHS.

Then in another scene on the DVD and not on the VHS one can easily guess who committed one of the crimes because the camera lingers on the guilt ridden-face of the actor. Lastly, there are numerous scenes with tremendous camera shake - I'm guessing director discards because again, they are not on the VHS.

Whomever mastered this superb movie at Warners should have bought the VHS from Amazon to use it as a guide as to how this movie should have been mastered and released. This is a total travesty to an excellent film that a lot of viewers waited a long time buy on disk.

Warners admit your mistake and re-master this film and re-release it as it should have been released. Amazon still have copies of the VHS available for your review.

The prolog shows socialite wife of a film producer, Sheila (Yvonne Romain) in the middle of the night getting ran down by a car on the street outside a party. We are left to find out if she was killed for a purpose.

Later Sheila's husband, Clinton Green (James Coburn) who is fond of games, invites six of the party participants to play a game which will take them to exotic location on his yacht. Most of the participants are losers in the movie business and jump at a chance to possible woo Clinton Green into a movie venture.

As the game gets underway we speculate as to its purpose and who will be the victim. Even the best guessers are in for a few surprises as this is a game within a game. And for the swift could be solved before it starts.

This film made in 1973 had a lot of the main actors from the best films of the 60's. They were all great I their roles and even though the role could not hide the actors it was fun watching them go through the motions as if this was an Agatha Christy play. The story was written by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim.

Watching the movie keep in mind that Sondheim was the lyricist to "Sweeney Todd" the demon barber of Fleet Street. This may be why the only down side to the movie was the scenes tat were a little too gorse and violent for the type of movie; I assume it was a product of the time.

In any event a lot of time went into the props and costumes, especially the panoramic scenes. We spend so much time on the story and props that sometime we miss the music; listen for "Friends", singer Bette Midler.
