In the 1980s, singer-songwriter and actor Rick Springfield seemed to have it all: a megahit single in “Jessie’s Girl,” sold-out concert tours, follow-up hits that sold more than 17 million albums and became the pop soundtrack for an entire generation, and 12 million daily viewers who avidly tuned in to General Hospital to swoon over his portrayal of the handsome Dr. Noah Drake. Yet lurking behind his success as a pop star and soap opera heartthrob and his unstoppable drive was a moody, somber, and dark soul, one filled with depression and insecurity.
In Late, Late at Night, the memoir his millions of fans have been waiting for, Rick takes readers inside the highs and lows of his extraordinary life. By turns winningly funny and heartbreakingly sad, every page resonates with Rick’s witty, wry, self-deprecating, brutally honest voice. On one level, he reveals the inside story of his ride to the top of the entertainment world. On a second, deeper level, he recounts with unsparing candor the forces that have driven his life, including his longtime battle with depression and thoughts of suicide, the shattering death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the absolute peak of fame. Having finally found a more stable equilibrium, Rick’s story is ultimately a positive one, deeply informed by his passion for creative expression through his music, a deep love of his wife of twenty-six years and their two sons, and his life-long quest for spiritual peace.

brutally honest and touching,
By A.R. "charlie's mom" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late, Late at Night (Hardcover)
I read this in one day, because I found it that compelling and I didn't want to put it down. Before I read this book, I knew basically nothing of Rick Springfield other than he had the hit "Jessie's Girl" and that I thought he was cute back in the 70's.I identified strongly with his battle with depression. He spoke honestly about the demons that tormented him through his life and the constant themes of self-doubt and loss; I felt as if the book was a conversation he was having with me, the reader. I have a son who is battling the same demons, and perhaps that is why it spoke so clearly to me. And I have to say, as a dog-lover, I really appreciated the fact that Rick is such a devoted dog person himself, and I will admit that the last paragraph of his book made me tear up.

Sex, sex, and roc-- OK, sex, sex, and pop,
By Chris (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late, Late at Night (Hardcover)
This well-written autobiography startled (and tired) with the subject's skanky behaviour, touched with his feelings for his father, impressed with his descriptions of Australia, and informed about most of the things I wanted to know about. Most. C'mon, Rick, wasn't Nick Knight pivotal to your career?

The 2 books I received were missing 30 pages near the end!,
By shopfolly (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late, Late at Night (Paperback)
The book seemed good until we realized that about 30 pages were missing near the end. They were replaced by other pages from the beginning. We returned it and asked for an exchange, but the new book had the same defect. Therefore we just returned it and got a refund. This was quite an unfortunate experience, especially as the book was a gift. But apparently the story itself is nice!
