Better as a document of an important modern artist than a film, but still worth seeing, April 27 2011
This review is from: Laurie Anderson (VHS Tape)
Laurie Anderson's self directed film of her 'Home of the Brave concert is only fair on a film-making level. Given the visual sophistication of her stage work, the film itself is shot in a pretty pedestrian manner, and the attempt to re-create a concert atmosphere feels `staged', with audience responses rather awkwardly handled, and feeling a bit forced (and it didn't seem to be a sly Anderson statement on concert films).
Also, for me, this was one of the less interesting periods of her music and stage work, missing the amazing scope of pieces like 'United States Part 1-4'.
None-the-less, it's great to have some filmed record of Anderson on stage. She is arguably among the most influential performers of the last 30 years, despite not being a household name. And despite it's flaws, this still captures some of what makes Anderson's combination of music, comedy, social commentary, irony, visual arts, electronics, and real emotion so unique. And that makes it worth seeing, whatever it's mild weaknesses.

First CD I ever purchased, April 7 2003
This CD is the sole reason (well, I got Kate Bush's 'The Hounds of Love' the same day) I purchased my first CD player back in 1985. I actually bought the CDs before the player.
Sure, I had heard "O Superman" from 'Big Science' a few years prior, but it did not do enough for me to go out and get the album. Excerpts that I heard from 'United States Live I-IV' were great, but I was a poor college student and could never justify purchasing it.
A friend (thanks Jon) had turned me on to "Language is a Virus" and "Smoke Rings" and we went to go see the movie and I was majorily in awe. Some of the soundtrack items are more clear and concise than the movie ("Language is a Virus". Conversely, somethings worked better on film ("Radar", "White Lily").
But either by video or audio - Laurie Anderson never fails to keep me interested and/or entertained.
It is unfortunate that the movie is not out in DVD - because as companion pieces, they soundtrack and movie are phenomenal.

I agree with the previous post..., Dec 20 2002
it really isn't the soundtrack. I have a degraded mono VHS recording of the laserdisk original. I sure wish someone would track down the master videotape and make a DVD of it. I'll be first in line to get my copy.
