Inspired and inpiring., Oct 12 2006
This review is from: Lazy Afternoon (Audio CD)
'Lazy Afternoon' is a powerful album, one that impresses on the first listen and gets better with repeated plays. In short, it's Regina's triumphant comeback in grand fashion, as intended. Twelve jazz/jazzy songs of extraordinary beauty, performed with her usual passion and exquisite elegance, which soothe your senses and your soul. Even the odd track that does not appear to strike one immediately, soon becomes a favourite. For example, "If I Should Lose You", although very sparse and simple, has that smouldering something that cannot be defined in words. Needless to say, it is a blinding album and one of the most brilliant CDs that Peak-Concord have ever released thus far. Even my other half, who doesn't mention my music unless she really likes it, thinks that this is a "gorgeous, gorgeous, album". So there you go! An essential album release, and one that really ought to be in your collection as soon as possible. "Why Do People Fall In Love" alone makes the album a "must" for every music lover. The song will break your heart and sink into your subconscious with one play, even if you aren't paying any attention to the compelling, modern lyrics. After the first listening - one of those "Everyone I know must hear this right now" moments - you'll feel like you've pulled up a golden truffle. Kudos go the great guest musicians and to the flawless production of George Duke, who reaches his zenith here as a pianist, arranger and producer. Will we hear a second combo like this again, sometime soon? Regina performs with such fluid ease that an immediate serene, warm presence envelopes you. When I listen to her, I become spellbound by her voice and magnificent style. If Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Teddy Randazzo were alive, she would be a marvelous inspiration for their song-writing talents. But also the living legends Burt Bacharach and Diane Warren could well consider her their muse as she would be the ideal interpreter for their songs. Regina Belle is a first rate performer. With this in mind, rush out and buy your copy today! Grade: A+

She is such a knock- 'em-dead singer ! You can't miss it!, Nov 25 2009
This review is from: Lazy Afternoon (Audio CD)
For those of you yet to experience the famed song-stylist Regina Belle this is by far and away the best place to start. This CD is a true showcase of her talents. With no fillers to make up the right number of tracks, you will hear Regina best at her best. This is how Jazz should be sung, the original songs are taken, deconstructed and then reconstructed with such skill and verve that you wonder how people liked the originals! Regina's first love is jazz, but she has absorbed musical influences from many different genres. This shows in her music, which is jazz-based, but with everything else added into the mix. On this album she sings torch songs, Broadway tunes and jazz standards, but she takes the songs apart and rearranges them in such a way as to sound original. I've heard plenty of rearranged covers by many different singers, but it is rare to find somebody who does it with such consistency. Listen to her version of "For The Love Of You" (the Isley Brothers' song) or "Corcovado" (the A.C.Jobim's classic, known also under "Quiet Nights", which has been covered by lots of people, by Diana Krall as well on "Quiet Nights", but never quite like Regina's version). With apparent effortlessness Ms. Belle uses her fantastic, immediately recognizable, throaty pipes and her signature sound to convey a range of emotions. She begins the opening track "Lazy Afternoon" low and smoky, then as the guitar and drums kick in, her voice becomes light and celebratory making way for saxmaster Everette Harp's beautiful solo; she ends the tune on a dramatic wistful note. That's typical of the warm, tasty sound, outstanding playing by all top-notch jazz musicians and inventive arrangements and the splendid production by the one and only George Duke that define the incomparable vocalist's seventh's album. Just brilliant. The only way to hear better is to take in one of her concerts and we cant all be that lucky. The only thing which really bothers me a lot is the Amazon's price! A bestseller like this should be sold at $ 9.99. I can't believe that Amazon will be much wealthier, pricing it so expensively. There must be other reasons! :-( But even at that price, the album is worthy a buy!

Stellar , groundbreaking , deadly beautiful !, April 13 2007
This review is from: Lazy Afternoon (Audio CD)
Ever since " Passion" and a couple of tracks "Ooh Boy", "Johnny's Back" from her previous CD "This Is Regina" and her collaboration with George Duke and saxman Steve Cole on the track " Just The Two of Us " on the album " To Grover, with Love ", I've been missing her full emotional range, her voice and her stylish phrasing back at the center again. " Lazy Afternoon" is that promise fulfilled. George Duke produced the miracle, reaching for Regina's heart, and recording a set of jazz standards that is both eclectic and finely wrought together. This is an album, that rare species of CDs that contain no duds, it's all great. Still, gems abound. Listen for instance to her voice in the gorgeous " Why Do People Fall In Love ","Corcovado"," For The Love of You", or the lyrics and groove of " Try A Little Tenderness". She can sings! George Duke's gift is in the nuances and details, here he offers precisely what each song needed. Some almost a wisp of guitar and a quiet bass , or piano , guitars or saxes in those places where it was the thing to have. Quite simply , this is the best record Belle has made in a long , long time. It seems she has given herself a wake-up call . All the tracks are beautiful in their purity, with her trademark downbeat, passionate , soulful vocals very much in excellent form . It just feels authentic, as if she is singing from the depths of her soul. This is a great album , an obvious choice for anyone who'd followed her career, a perfect place to start in your way back to her first album " All By Myself ", or just a tremendous addition to any respectable collection. In all, this is an album of a calibre that few will be able to match, with her intimate, stark simplicity demonstrating perfectly that substance and sincerity will always triumph over hype. It is a truly superb album, sung so beautifully that it will make you have chills up to your spine over and over again. " Lady 'Belle' Afternoon " really has a voice that would make angels jealous. Buy it, I implore you.
