Product Description

From Amazon.com

So much has been said about disco-punk's King Midas, New York musician/producer James Murphy, that it's kind of hard to believe that we've had to wait until 2005 for the debut album from his dancefloor project, LCD Soundsystem. LCD's classic triumvirate of early singles--"Losing My Edge," "Give It Up," and "Yeah"--joined the dots between punk-rock, disco, and funk in a way that hadn't been seen since the New York downtown scene of the early '80s, but these are bravely relegated to a bonus disc in favor of a suite of new material that reworks the band's influences in new, often explicit ways: take "Movement," for instance--a homage to the Fall that finds Murphy barking "It's a fat guy/ In a T-shirt/ Doing all the singing!" over punchy analog synths, or the quietly majestic "Great Release," a doff of the cap to Brian Eno circa Taking Tiger Mountain. For all his encyclopedic musical knowledge, however, it's one of Murphy's strengths that he seldom seems uptight about the practice of music-making: it's how he can get away with penning a gonzo disco-punk number and naming it something as fantastically flippant as "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House"--and more importantly, it's why LCD Soundsystem succeeds as a splendid dance record as well as a smart intellectual exercise. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

2007 reissue of the single disc version of the Electro Rock band's debut album featuring one bonus track: "Yr City's A Sucker". Originally released in 2005, LCD Soundsystem's self-titled debut lived up to all the hype surrounding it and featured a modern hodge-podge of electronic sounds that owed a huge debt to their influences but remained original and exciting. 5.0 out of 5 stars The real thing - with no make-up, Jan 25 2007
By Torval Mork (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews

I thought I had the inside goods on what was what in music until I listened to the song "Losing My Edge" on this uber-hip album by LCD Soundsystem. Listening to it, along with all the other tracks, including the now famous "Daft Punk is Playing at My House", feels like I've switched onto a radio show paying reverence to the music of avant garde 1980's New York. This two-CD set is heavily referential, spanning influences from Talking Heads to German dance, Lou Reed to Nitzer Ebb. I gave up trying to find relevance in his references, and instead gave in to the sweet beats and infectious grooves. Murphy really lays down the law with his use of the TR-808 overlayed with acoustic drums - a trippy element, kind of like welding the electronica to the rock using solid gold as a solder. Each song is a stand out on both discs, with no puff-pieces or over-usage of any kind - it's one of those disks I'd put on my "If I was shipwrecked on a desert island...." lists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just when you thought it was safe to be an indie snob, Nov 28 2005
By Paul W. Mayer (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
James Murphy of NYC-based DFA records is the mastermind behind this super-danceable mash-up of funk, punk, hip-hop, avant-garde art rock, psychedelic pop, and electronica. Fans of Talking Heads albums "Speaking in Tongues", and "Remain in Light" will love this!

Until recently, Murphy's resume consisted mainly of production credits, while releasing singles of his own music sporadically since '02 under the name LCD Sounsystem . This began with the brilliantly self-conscious "Losing My Edge", in which Murphy lists off a bunch of records and artists you've probably never heard of unless you are an obsessive-compulsive music collector, and sums up the uber-geek infighting with the conlusion "you don't know what you really want", all over top of a driving beat loop with smatterings of synth, distortion, instrumental noise, and under-production. In a way, this track sums up everything that LCD Soundsystem is about (and for this reason I highly recommend buying the 2-disc version, in which you get an overview of LCD Sounsystem before 2005).

It's clear that Murphy has obviously listenned to way more records than you, knows more than you do, and has more "indie cred" than you do, but it doesn't stop him from making a record that is accessible, smart, and a helluva lot of fun. And while in the midst of pop culture's current retro-and-underground-obsessed mood, and the dance-rock mini blip, this record is especially timely, Murphy is so refreshingly unafraid of showing his cards that it comes off as far from contrived.
So it's official - you can stop worrying about what pair of sneakers is hip this week and start having fun again.

P.S. If you can see them live, do it!!! So rad!

5.0 out of 5 stars Un essentiel de 2005, Mar 18 2005
By "hulexback" (Mont-Tremblant, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
Franchement, fantastique!
Les moments clés du disque sont, selon moi, Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, Too Much Love, Trubulation, Loosing My Edge et, l'excellent morceau Yeah (Crass Version).
Vous aimez l'électro? Vous aimez le Dance intelligent? Vous aimez The Rapture? Vous aimerez LCD Soundsystem pour sûr!!!
