I consider Jordi Savall as important a performer for the Viola da Gamba as Pablo Casals was for the Cello. It is worth noting that both these great artists came from Catalonia and rose to world fame by the mastery and integrity of their musicianship and humanity. Maestro Savall's life-work has been a major influence on the development of my own art and scholarship, so I am always on the lookout for his records.
I was most interested to hear the Telemann pieces with Mr. Savall as the soloist. I am happy to have bought this record. His playing is deeply satisfying and he clearly inspires his orchestra. When he conducts, the ensemble sounds crisp and stylish. The whole CD would be fine, were it not for the occasional solo violin duets. It is a pity that these are of a much different quality. Their scratchy, superficial tone makes me wonder if there was just not enough time for coaching...
