About the Author

Sheryl Sandberg is chief operating officer at Facebook. Prior to Facebook, she was vice president of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google and chief of staff at the U.S. Treasury Department. Sheryl lives in Northern California with her husband and their two children.

As a male manager in tech who has recently become more sensitive to gender issues in the workplace, I'm glad this book came along when it did. It contains actionable advice for male and female workers of all levels, and outside of the gender discussion there are pearls of wisdom for anyone interested in their career.

Like many readers, I found myself nodding and sometimes laughing while thinking, "I've been there." I remember meetings I attended where I was the only woman in the room. I became known for providing an analytical and frank assessment of a situation. The downside was often being told that I had a very 'male' communication style. I believe, the reality is that when the majority of the group is one sex, we, as female supervisors or executives tend to gravitate to the dominant style. What Sheryl echoed is that women in that situation are often kept at arm's length by the males, but, also, by other females who convey subtle and not so subtle messages of disapproval and distrust. She continues at-length about why more women don't speak up, why more women aren't visible in the boardroom and why more women don't tap into their leadership skills to get ahead. For me, she made some very poignant comments and it wasn't just that girl's focus on relationships and boys on events. Instead, it was about how women are pre-programmed to believe it is wrong for women to lead. I agree. Until we get over saying, "I would prefer to work for a man than a woman", we are part of the problem - we are in our own way.

I am a feminist and am proud of it. I believe in equality. However, for whatever reasons, we are not individually or collectively caring the torch from our predecessors. I agree with Sheryl who feels the movement is slipping. I think the purpose of this book is for Sheryl to convey her own personal thoughts about feminism, but, it is also to challenge what you think and how you act. The book isn't about whether you think like Sheryl and agree with all of her opinions. My takeaways are these:

1. What would you do if you weren't afraid?
2. How much does being 'liked' factor into what you do and what you let pass by.

I really like this book. Ended up buying a few copies in audible.com, Kindle and paperback as gifts. This is a very personal book - Sandberg has a way of telling her stories that makes it enjoyable and relatable (and I'm a guy). You really want to get behind her cause... I asked my wife if my 10 year old niece is too young to get a copy of the book. (Yes, too young)

I read this book while I was preparing for a job interview which was going to be a HUGE stretch for me professionally. Sheryl's advice and insights gave me the confidence I needed to do well, and yes, I got the job. You do not need to be a top executive to benefit from this book. It is written for every woman who has ever doubted her abilities. Very well done.

Sheryl provides great insight to the way we think as women, we never share these thoughts with others for fear we will be condemned as not strong enough, not smart enough, This book helps you to understand that what you think and feel is normal and yes you really are as good as you think yourself to be, do not hold yourself back, we tend to be our own worst enemies, as self critics we are harder on ourselves than we should be and we really can do it all if we just put our minds to it.
