A truly fantastic book, and a real insight into the life of one of the worlds greatest climbers. The book is an amazingly open and honest account of Andy Cave's life upto the epic climb on Changabang - honestly you won't put this one down from start to finish.

The word "inspirational" is used too often in reviews of biographical books. However, this book is. Through the gritty industrial action world of the Thatcher years coal mine closures to the extraordinary challenge of cutting-edge mountaineering, a considerable honesty shines through. Climbers tend to be a thoughtful group of people (there's a lot of "down time" due to weather!), but the ability to put these thoughts on paper is a great skill. The author, in addition to his busy life as a climber, also has a PhD in linguistics - a thesis that might actually be an enjoyable read!.
As I was nearing the end of this book, Amazon, in their inimitable way, suggested I might enjoy the sequel Thin White Line- they were right.

I was trekking through the Dolomites and thought this one book would be suffice for the trip. I spent so much time reading at the end of my days that 3 days in I was nearing the end of the book. Andy Cave manages to capture you and place you in both the mines of England and the mountain tops of the Himalayas. I recommend to anyone, even if not interested in mountaineering.
