upon receiving and inspecting i believe the unit to be a refurbished one. item was advertised as "new".
the excess black oxide coating that should normally all rub off and turn your hands black had already been rubbed off.
all tool joints had significant amount of lubrication, other leatherman's i've purchased new in the past have not had "WD40" applied to it.
it is not believed that these multi tools come factory lubricated.
as for the tool itself it performs as expected.
beware of items advertised as "new" from this seller.

I have owned a couple Leatherman tools over the years, this one replaced the Super Tool 200.
Having external access to the blades is much easier than having to open the tool completely every time to use the knife.
The black looks great, but scratches show up better as well. I actually like the beat up look it gets though.
I upgraded from the Super Tool 200 specifically for the bit driver, which is super handy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the lack of bits. The extra kit isn't very expensive though and gives almost every bit I would need.

This is an awesome tool. I am a communications technician doing retro fit installation and various degrees of integrations and installs. I need to have a variety of less then obvious tools with me usually. This tool on my belt has saved me trips to my vehicle more then a few times. It offers a great variety of useful and accessible tools made with high quality fit and finishes. I am very happy with it. I would recommend this Leatherman to anyone who performs technician based work, anything with computers or electronics or just likes to be that guy who has the tool when someone needs it!

I barely used it and then used the wire cutters on a wire as thick as a paper clip and it broke!

Great, but... Aug. 4 2010
By Z. Palmer - Published on Amazon.com

First, I love it. I won't review the actual tool as it's great and I have nothing to add. I've owned/used countless leathermans over the years and I love the tools.

as another person has mentioned, the finish on this tool is less than ideal. It comes off on your hands and anything you touch for the first week or two of use. In addition, it's easily scratched during this time. No, Neither effect the function, but it's also not what I expect from leatherman. Concerned that the one I received didn't have a chance to finish curing, I emailed Leatherman (see below). I'm not sure why they can't cure the finish before sending it out or use a different type of black finish (i.e. gun blueing).

It's still on my belt and I love it, but come on leatherman, fix it.

Thank you for your email and your interest in Leatherman Tools.

The black coating is applied on the exterior of the tool. It does come off on your hands especially at the beginning. The oils from your hand do help to set the black so the more you handle the tool, the more the color is set.

The black is on the surface only, so scratches will show. The black tools were developed with the goal of keeping reflection off the surface with military applications in mind where scratches are perhaps less important.

I hope this helps.
Best regards,

Rachele ******

Beautiful--with one nagging flaw... April 22 2010
By Anna Berenyi - Published on Amazon.com

This is essentially the perfect multi-tool. The functions included here will cover all of your bases without crowding your available space, which seems to be all-too common among multi-tools. The craftsmanship is outstanding; it looks and feels as durable as it gets. And now finally a matte black finish turns a clumsy looking gadget into a beautiful machine.

However, herein lies its particularly annoying flaw. Right out of the box, the finishing coat on this tool left black smudges and marks all over my hands, especially where lubricant was applied. Now, overlooking the sissy/feminine jokes sure to come, that's just not okay with me, especially if those smudges transfer to whatever I'm working on. Luckily, within half an hour or so of thoroughly cleaning it with moist cotton swabs, the black finally stopped getting on my hands. To keep the joints turning fluidly, I reapplied some WD-40 from their pen dispenser.

After all of that, I couldn't ask for a better product, but I wouldn't want others to run into this same issue without due warning.

Leatherman Wave Black Oxide Black Finish Oct. 6 2012

Wow!...What a Great Multi-Tool! I have been looking for just the right EDC Multi-Tool(Every Day Carry)and I found it in the Leatherman Wave. I have purchased many multi-tools and have found that the Leatherman Wave has everything I need. I purchased mine a week ago and have used it many times already. It Does the job! (FYI..The knife will be packaged loose inside the box w/ sheath. I mean loose...no bubble wrap here)

The Wave comes with a sheath...If you are not a fan of wearing a sheath; I would recommend buying the pocket clip w/ lanyard loop kit (Leatherman Wave comes w/ a built in lanyard loop) at the same time you buy your Leatherman Wave. I would do this because after only two days of wearing the sheath on my belt; It felt like I was wearing a brick on my belt. I bumped into everything with it and was trying to find a comfortable way to keep it from catching on my seat belt. I could not find a comfortable way to wear this sheath. I ordered the pocket clip w/ lanyard loop and installed it on my Wave. Wow...What a difference. I can clip it to my front or back pocket and I can hardly feel it is there. I carry this now every day over my regular knife.

OK..Now on to the finish...Black Oxide. I love this finish. What a great Ops look & very COOL!! This is the cheapest way to finish a military weapon / tool to provide some kind of protection against corrosion. I wouldn't think this would be a problem, because this baby is made from stainless steel, but, stainless steel can spot or stain if you don't take care or clean it often. The Black Oxide finish will allow you to go a little longer without oiling or cleaning.

When you get your Leatherman Wave w/ Black Oxide finish ...you will get "Black Hands"..I mean the finish will rub off on to your hands. No worry! This is typical to this type of Military finish. "DO NOT BUY THIS FINISH - IF YOU ARE PICKY ABOUT FINISH AND LOOKS" This is a military finish!

This finish starts out a very nice oiled black and then seams to start to rub off on your hands and show scuffs & scratches (Don't worry) the more you handle it the better the finish gets. It will look like it has been used for many years after only one week. Kinda like a baseball glove. You have to work on the finish with your hands. The oils from your hands and the knife work together and develop a great finish. Trust me...If you like military...you will like this finish. Oil it up now and then and you will have the BEST Multi-Tool ever....Leatherman Wave Black Oxide.

Keep that Knife Sharp...

Fantastic tool. Oxide coating needs some pre-use treatment. July 29 2013

In January, I bought this for general use. As a university student, I found there were many cases where a multitool would be handy. I've always heard great things about Leatherman products, and for good reason. The tool is extremely well made and is built to last. As to be expected, it's not exactly light weight. The warranty is outstanding. The tools are easy to reach and the selection allows you to conquer just about anything.

Most reviewers note a black substance remains on your hands for the first while after you bought it. This is not a product flaw, but rather the result of chemistry. Black oxide is a "conversion coating", which means it changes the surface of the product, rather than covering the product, as paint would. Black oxide is formed by oxidizing the outer layer of atoms on the surface. In effect, it's controlled rust. When you first use the product, the black substance is this outer layer. It will wear away to some extent, but that' the nature of this finish. To avoid the stains, simply take a rag with WD-40 (or similar oil) and rub the tool surfaces thoroughly. The oil will set the finish and allow it to last longer. This is what your skin oils are actually doing when you handle the tool.

The only other thing to do is open and close the tools and number of times to loosen them up. If you're rubbing down the surface, you can open the tools to wipe them and take care of the stiffness as well.

I highly recommend this multitool. It really is fantastic. I've fixed my lab stool (screws were falling out), cleared two jammed staplers, and opened numerous packages.

This really is a wonderfully engineering and built tool that will last for a very long time.

Durability = ??? Sept. 8 2010
By Ex-Army Wizard - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this tool while in Baghdad, Iraq in 2006. Matte Black was all the rage, as no one wanted a glinting, silver, non-camo tool shining in the sun! And I did not have a problem with the matte black finish rubbing off like others have reported. HOWEVER...Just last weekend, safe back in the USA, I used the pliers to twist a metal band slightly and they snapped cleanly in half. I am terribly disappointed at the lack of durability, and glad I never had to "trust my life," to the thing in a survival situation. Leatherman must do better than this!!!
