Product Description

Product Description

Amber's family think she's gone to Cornwall on holiday, but really she's left home. She's forging a new life - new house mates, new job and (with a little luck) new boyfriend. She feels bad because her mother and Poppy need her, but she's got to make the break, get out of their clutches. Then Amber falls ill and her family come to look after her. Something in the house responds to Poppy's presence, something malign and threatening. When Poppy moves into the attic, it gets even stronger, until evil seems to permeate everywhere and Amber thinks she might never be able to escape...This is a chilling and absorbing novel from a brilliant storyteller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, tense, and twisted, Sep 24 2006
By Erika Soeterik - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Leaving Poppy (Paperback)
Amber has always lived under the shadow of her half sister Poppy. Poppy is the one that their mother watches and cares for, the one that gets all of the attention and makes sure that she gets her own way. Sneaking away to Cornwall to have a "holiday", Amber finally manages to slip away from her mother and Poppy, but when she tells her mother that she is not coming home it is only the start of things going wrong.

Soon Amber finds herself living under the same roof as Poppy again - and while Poppy seems to be behaving herself there are disturbing things happening in the house. There are strange noises at night, things are being moved, and Poppy seems to be too interested in things she finds in the house.

As the tension in the house rises, Amber must try and figure out what is happening and how she can stop it before Poppy takes things too far - but is it even Poppy that is causing things to happen?

An intense read that was hard to put down. There are enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat as you cheer Amber on towards the end. Amber is the kind of person that you want to cheer for - and Poppy is the kind of sister that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever! and even a little spooky!, Feb 4 2009
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Leaving Poppy (Paperback)
As usual Kate Cann's writing wins me over completely and leaves me wanting me more. I couldnt put this one down and was very sadden when i was over. In this novel Cann takes her first (that i know of) stab at supernatural fiction. It works so well with the rest of the story everything flows together as one. Leaving Poppy is about a girl trying to get away from her crazy smothering mother and sister, Poppy. Reading this I felt I could completely identify with Amber trying to finally live her own life. This a thrilling and yet a little spooky and sooo worth reading.
