Loved It!, Sep 14 2010

I picked this up today to add to the growing library of children's books I have on hand for my grandchildren and - wow! - what a wonderful addition it's going to be!
The Legend of the Golden Snail is the story of Wilbur, a likeable and kind-hearted young boy whose favorite story tells of a fantastical golden snail that took the form of a "Snailing Ship" and sailed through magical realms. Captured and put under a spell by The Grand Enchanter, the Golden Snail was banished to the Ends of the Earth when the Enchanter grew tired of sailing. And there she will remain, unless a new Grand Enchanter - or a Gallant Captain - can find her and speak the magic verse that will break the banishment spell and allow him to sail her again.
After hearing the story many times, Wilbur decides to become the next Grand Enchanter and seek out the Golden Snail. I loved the moment when he tells his mother that he is "off to roam the oceans. Back in a hundred years." Her response? "I've made you a Captain's hat." Encouragement and support of imaginary play (or, if you perfer, of seeking one's dreams) in six words. Perfect. It is also telling that the hat she made is that of a Captain rather than an Enchanter. With that choice she has helped give him direction for his life as well. Even more perfect.
The ensuing journey is exciting, fun and satisfying. Wilbur's kindnesses - his gallantries - are many and do not go unrewarded. In the end he learns that he may not make the best Grand Enchanter, but as a Gallant Captain, he is a success.
The book's artwork is absolutely gorgeous and perfectly captures the changing moods in the story, reflecting the promise of beginnings, the excitement of the journey, the quiet moments and the heartwarming climax. Australian author and illustrator Graeme Base places a border around the edges of the artwork, but allows some items or portions of the painting to escape the border, giving the impression that the story simply couldn't be contained in the space allowed. I found it very effective. Base also includes hidden pictures in the paintings; readers can go to his very attractive website and play an interactive game to locate them all. (I'm still searching for a few of them myself...)
This is the first time I've encountered Graeme Base. I'm incredibly impressed and will certainly be checking out his other work.
My grandkids are going to love this one and I am going to love sharing it with them.
Very highly recommended.
ETA: Grandkids loved it, too! :)

I have been a long time fan of Graeme Base's books, and this one, the Legend of the Golden Snail, is another Beautiful book with a lovely (short) story full of hidden images, and imagination. My two boys (ages 5 and 2) both love it. THere arent too many words on each page, which helps keep their interest, and the artwork is wonderful. I cant wait for another book from this wonderfully talented artist/author.

I bought this book for my 3 year old grandson, who loves it but understands it on a partial level. The 7 year old, however, gets the "imagination" theme and is still hunting for a couple of the hidden snails. I recommend THE LEGEND OF THE GOLDEN SNAIL.
