This much-maligned big-screen version of the well-loved radio and TV show stands as one of the rare cases in which the entire performance of one of a film's stars was redubbed by another actor. (For the others, see Andie McDowell in Greystoke and Harvey Keitel in Saturn 3.) In this case, it was youngster Klinton Spilsbury (and whatever happened to him?), cast as the famous Texas Ranger, ambushed by villains and left for dead, only to return with silver bullets, a horse named Silver, a mask, and a Native American sidekick named Tonto (Michael Horse) on a one-man mission for justice. In this film he battles a vicious group of bad guys led by a flinty-eyed Christopher Lloyd. Spilsbury's every line was redubbed by James Keach. Despite a critical drubbing, this is actually a better Western than you would expect, given its long-sullied reputation. --Marshall Fine

Another old time favorite. I used to watch the Lone Ranger on TV when I was younger. I enjoyed the new version as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT widescreen as advertised. Oct 12 2012

I feel cheated. The description of this product clearly states that the film is presented in a fullscreen AND widescreen format. The DVD's case, however, clearly says otherwise. This is presented in a squished fullscreen format.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but a decent story Dec 14 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fans of the Lone Ranger will find the story interesting and refreshing, but the production value is disappointing.
Klinton Spilsbury is a bit stiff as the hero but has his moments in the movie.
My biggest disappointment is this movie isn't available in widescreen format. This DVD has opening credits in the squeezed widescreen format to fit in the full screen ... but who really wants unusually thin stagecoaches and horses. The 4:3 format is used throughout the movie BUT is grainy a lot of the time. The closing credits are in regular widescreen format with the top and bottom black bars ... that should have been there for the whole move. In fact, the closing credits are sharper and clearer than the rest of the movie.
Had this been in widescreen format, I would have given it 3-1/2, maybe 4 stars.
