An epic saga comes to an end with these 22 episodes (on five discs) from the second and final season of the sword-and-sorcery series Legend of the Seeker. Actually, there's a teaser at the end of the last episode that promises more to come, but since the show wasn't renewed, we may never know what its creators had in store. But there's plenty here for adherents to digest in the meantime. When the last season ended, Richard Cypher (Craig Horner), better known as the Seeker, had at last managed to kill his mortal enemy, Darken Rahl (Craig Parker). But although he may be dead, Rahl isn't gone; dispatched to the Underworld, he now answers to the Keeper, lord of that desolate realm (a scene straight out of a Brueghel or Bosch painting, with a fiery landscape crowded with miserable writhing souls). The Keeper, whom we hear but never see, has already set in motion his plan to win the "ultimate battle between good and evil," as it's breathlessly described; he's opened a rift in the Earth's surface, through which he plans to dispatch all manner of monsters, "banelings" (dead souls restored to life--if they agree to kill on the Keeper's behalf), and other bad mojo. Only our hero can stop him, of course. He and three cohorts--Kahlan (Bridget Regan), a powerful "Confessor" and Richard's love interest; Zedd (Bruce Spence), a clever wizard; and Cara (Tabrett Bethell), a member of a band of malevolent warrior women called the Mord'Sith who's now on the side of the good guys--set out on a quest to find the Stone of Tears, which alone can seal the rift. Needless to say, there are many obstacles to overcome (spells, curses, wizards and witches, zombies on the loose, tough chicks in leather catsuits) and battles to be fought along the way.

Legend of the Seeker is bound to appeal to fans of The Lord of the Rings and its ilk (like Rings, it was filmed in New Zealand), as long as viewers are willing to lower their expectations. This is television, after all, with its smaller budgets and hurried shooting schedules, and its shortcomings are apparent in the acting (Horner is bland in the lead role, but no one will be winning any Emmys here), writing (the scripts have more than a few hokey moments), and production values like costumes, sets, and effects. But is it entertaining? Absolutely. --Sam Graham

4.0 out of 5 stars World of the dead, Jun 16 2010

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Legend of Seeker: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
Usually when the hero of a fantasy series kills the villain and saves the world, that's where the story ends. But apparently Richard Cypher isn't getting that kind of break. "Legend of the Seeker: Complete Second Season" is a creepier, grimmer affair in places than the previous season, with a new onslaught of grotesque monsters and magical adventures.

Richard (Craig Horner) and his friends join in the celebration of Darken Rahl's death... only for their banquet to be crashed by a monstrous "skreeling." Apparently rifts to the underworld of the dead (ruled by the evil Keeper) are opening, and undead banelings are rising to attack the living.

The only way to stop all this: find the legendary Stone of Tears. So Richard, Kahlan (Brigit Regan), Zedd (Bruce Spence) and the Mord Sith Cara (Tabrett Bethel) set out on a new quest. The problem is, a new prophecy has risen saying that Richard has to be replaced by a new Seeker, or he'll end up HELPING the Keeper.

On their journey, the little group must deal with banelings, pacifists, magical disasters, a clueless young Confessor, a familiar Mord Sith enemy, vengeful monsters, a mysterious young girl who claims to be the Creator, and an old enemy returned from the dead. And when the mysterious Sisters of the Light (nuns?) briefly take Richard into the Old World, he discovers that there is a force fighting on behalf of the Keeper -- the Sisters of the Dark (evil nuns!).

The second season of "Legend of the Seeker" is a much darker and bleaker story than the first season was. Not only is the whole world threatened with annihilation, but we're treated to rotting-faced undead, terrible deaths, and occasional trips into the writhing screaming Dantean misery of the Underworld (so... good people go to hell too?).

Don't worry. Most of the time, writers rely on what works best: solid standalone stories threaded on a season-long arc, with plenty of sword-swinging action, lush New Zealand scenery and magical artifacts. And there are some delightfully funny episodes ("Princess," in which Cara has to pretend to be a ladylike royal), and snappy dialogue. It all culminates in a brilliantly complex, emotionally-wrenching finale that wraps up everything quite nicely.

And while Richard is still a gold-hearted sweetie, the newly-scruffy Horner gets to explore some of his character's darker facets -- Richard has to struggle with his rage, sorrow and resentment, as well as some discoveries about his family. Regan and Spence both give excellent performances as well, especially when Kahlan and Zedd are hit by magical mishaps.

As a new addition to the main cast, Bethell gets to shine as the sarcastic, chilly Cara, who starts to slowly warm up and even briefly gets a boyfriend. And Craig Parker has a smaller but still excellent role as the casually villainous Darken Rahl.

"Legend of the Seeker: The Complete Second Season" is a darker story than the first season, but the excellent actors and writing carry it through smoothly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Season, Jun 19 2011
This review is from: Legend of Seeker: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
The second, and unfortunately final season of this great show just keeps getting better. We see the addition of the Mord'Sith, Cara, introduced in the season 1 finale, join forces with Richard and his companions. The dynamic between a Mord'sith and Richard's Confessor, Kaitlin, makes for some interesting conflicts.

We also get to see more of Zedd's humorous ways, and some insights into many of the main characters' pasts, as well as discovering a shocking secret about Richard's true lineage.

An excellent show, filled with magic, intense combat scenes, a seemingly improved budget, and a beautiful and fascinating new ally named Cara in the battle against the forces of darkness.

This show should have gone on for many more seasons. Curse ABC Originals for their mishandling of their own shows. Had Sci-fi or the CW produced this show, it would have gone on for a long time.

I personnaly think season one was a little better in the making, a tint more realistic with less obvious make up that kinda feel out of place in the lost woods... But season 2 is awesome as well! :D With old and new characters that i ended up enjoying much!
The characters have depth (despite what they look like sometimes :o) and it's great to see their relationship evolve during the season. There are some flaws in the story telling, some rare incogruencies, but the great actors and characters and fights and emotions made it up for the flaws to my eyes.

It's different then the books, very different on some levels and i think it should be enjoyed as something apart.

I found the first episodes a bit difficult to go through, more in horror-zombie like, but after i was glad i went through with all the season. =) LEGEND OF THE SEEKER is filled with action, magic, friendships, love, great costume design and stunning landscapes, the whole built up with great and various characters. <3

It's not perfect, nothing ever is, but i've gotten found of season 2 for what it is, so i give it its five stars. :)
