"When Evil Calls" is a collection that draws upon 14 different comics--all written by veteran writer Paul Levitz--focusing on the Legion of Super-Heroes, DC's premier team of heroes in the future. Levitz offers an interesting story as villains threaten the universe and the Legion responds. Besides offering a look at the Legion Academy, Levitz shows, once again, that he is able to pull the strings on the Tolstoyian cast of Legion characters though some of the characters (namely Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad) are barely in the story. This an exciting tale that shows the Legion at its best and, if not up there with the best of Levitz's stories, this is a very solid story that fans will appreciate. Despite having more than 15 pencilers and inkers on these books, the art is solid and--usually--fairly consistent. Still, the story is a little anti-climatic. With this version of the Legion's comic getting the plug pulled after only 16 issues as DC was rebooting the "new 52," Levitz tries to close the story at a breakneck pace, taking care of plot holes and loose threads a bit too predictably. Despite this, comic fans in general and Legion fans will enjoy this collection of comics.
