Legrand is Grand, Feb 8 2009
By Charles Mymit - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Legrand;Michel Live in Brussel (DVD)
Michel Legrand is a monster composer, arranger and jazz pianist. He composes music for film and many of his songs have become standards and jazz standards. On this live video,Legrand conducts his music with a symphonic orchestra and performs his music on piano with a swinging quartet. His chops on piano are in the realm of the great Oscar Peterson and his melodies stay in your head.He is joined with a great alto/tenor sax soloist,a good jazz trumpet player and an unbelieable female harpist! His singing is not that good-but it is musical-so its not that painfull.
This is a great DVD to see & listen to!

Legrand Not Quite Grand, Jan 21 2010

This review is from: Legrand;Michel Live in Brussel (DVD)
Michel Legrand has made a name for himself, and rightly so, as a composer of movie musical scores. The music for the movies, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Yentl, and The Summer of 41, are a few of his most famous. On the first half of this dvd, he plays excerpts from these films and from others, conducting a large orchestra. My complaint is that Mr. Legrand has a tendency to overarrange the orchestration of the music. As a result, the melody line gets buried in his florid approach. I would have preferred less fuss and more recognizability. In the second half of the dvd, Mr. Legrand eschews the large orchestra, and he is joined by his small jazz combo. As well as playing some mean jazz, he sings. His voice isn't the greatest, but he knows his way around a song. Mr. Legrand speaks to his audience in French to announce the music he plays, and there are English subtitles. However, when he sings, in French, a medley of his not so famous music, with lyrics by a poet friend of his, and makes a point about the beauty of the lyrics, there are no English subtititles to substantiate his claim. That frustrated me. I would have liked to give this dvd a four or five star review, but I couldn't because of the reasons I've stated.
