Book Description

July 24 2006 International Graphic Design
Vignelli is a powerful name in graphic design. IMAGES' Hands On series is greatly enhanced by this wonderful book by Lella and Massimo Vignelli. Massimo learnt early in his career that a designer should be able to design everything, hence, 'design is one'. Lella and Massimo Vignelli prove that design should be semantically correct, syntactically correct, and pragmatically understandable, but also visually powerful, intellectually elegant and timeless. The book shows that real meaning must be researched and consistent throughout a design, and that the final result must be understandable. Design as a complete, or perfect statement is paramount in the philosophy of these modern designers. This is borne out in the featured designs for corporate identity, packaging, post design, interior design, architectural graphics, book and magazine design, furniture design and product design, many with instant global recognition.

3.0 out of 5 stars The power of design Dec 23 2011
Format:Hardcover
Images Publishing of Australia bought out this book in 2004 and in 2007 published 'Vignelli: from A to Z'. Lars Muller published 'The Vignelli Canon' in 2011. There is a similarity between these three books: approximately the same size and a lot of duplication with the images.

'Design is One' is no more than a photo and caption biography of Lella and Massimo's work from 1955 to 2003. The 'A to Z' as the title suggests uses each letter to tie in with some of their work. The Canon I thought was the best of the three. The contents are divided into two sections: The Intangibles looks at the intellectual basis of design and The Tangibles provides some basic practical observations.

For much more comprehensive look at the Vignelli's work check out Rizzoli's 1990 published 276 pages overview: 'Design: Vignelli'.

4.0 out of 5 stars One to one Jan. 29 2005

What is nice about books such as 'Design is One' is the quality of narrating your experience in first person. Massimo talks to you as you read, making it a very personal tour through the rich Vignelli life of design. To notice the excitements and dissappointments, thus, makes it more of a true story than a glorified publishing product. I didnt enjoy a designer's work more through a book since I read a similar narrative book on Frank Gehry.

An excellent publication, demonstrating a range of outstanding design. For students, read the words don't just look at the illustrations!
