An agreeable and quick read about lemons. Feb. 28 2015
By lyndonbrecht - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is an agreeable read, more like an illustrated essay than a book. The writing is a bit breezy but solid, the research seems good and the illustrations are as usual in the series, excellent. Sonneman traces the lemon's ancestry to the citron, which apparently the Greeks and Romans loved. Interesting (to me, anyway) is the importance of Arab Sicily in bringing lemons to Europe; We tend to forget how much Arab knowledge passed into European culture (Arabic numerals, algebra for example) and this is another case of it.

The chapters include Origins and Obsessions; Sicily, Arab Mediterranean; Exotic treasure; The Lemon Cure; Lemonade; To and From the Golden State; At Home and in the World. There are recipes. Among the tidbits of information is the role of lemons in stopping scurvy, that for so long debilitated sailors; selection and development of lemon varieties; lemons in several cuisines.

A great story for anyone who likes food and history. I bought 4 more for gifts. A tour d'force by a fine writer. Bob Kremenak
