A Lovely Book, April 19 2011
By gpstogo "Lee" - Published on Amazon.com
To begin with, the content speaks eloquently for itself and anyone purchasing this new book knows exactly what it contains and the graceful elegance of Leonard Cohen's works. It's difficult to not begin to sing or hum as you read familiar, loved song lyrics you've listened to far more times than you'd ever admit. His poetry can speak to almost all of us in our life's journey ... the names are different but the feelings are the same.
That having been said, I'd like to point out something that I particularly liked about this 1st edition, Random House hardcover book. I don't know about you, but I've had my share of smaller books that almost had to be forced open and held down with weights to comfortably read the text closest to the center spine and that were determined to snap shut at the least lessening of pressure. These books were awkward to hold and read....a particularly annoying feature to me as I buy my books to read, annotate, and enjoy. Books that snap shut or have to be forced open generally end up on my shelf rather than in my hands.
Well, despite its smaller size, you will not experience that with this book. The paper is of good quality and the method of binding makes opening and reading any page quite comfortable. I don't know the technical name for the paper that is glued on the inside of the front and back covers but the one used in this is very nice. The book is something that you could easily take along with you to read anywhere and comfortably hold in your hand without having to force it open. Given the price, I didn't expect to find this quality but its there.
As always though, the beauty and graciousness lies in the material within this book and being able to comfortably hold and read it is just a plus. I'd recommend it to any Leonard Cohen follower ... it addresses the life events of a remarkable man. Now I'll confess to having bought two of these for myself. Why? Because I tend to highlight phrases/words that particularly catch my attention and make annotations for myself and so I'm doing that with one copy while the other will remain in pristine condition. My 'working' copy has something I wrote on the inside back cover as my gesture of respect to a gentle, gracious man ... 'To Life, To Beauty, To Wisdom, To Thought"

Two verses missing for The Story of Isaac, Oct 26 2011
By Peggy C. Turnbull - Published on Amazon.com
The first two verses of "The Story of Isaac" are included; the last two are omitted. It seems to be intentional, as the Table of Contents identifies the page numbers correctly, so it's not as if a page is missing. But no one who loves Cohen's work would deliberately truncate this chilling poem. A regrettable flaw in an otherwise magnificent collection.
