Product Description

From Amazon

If you buy only one film book in your life, this should be it. Maltin is the filmgoer's guide--the most compact, intelligent, and informative reference available. Alphabetized by title, each of its more than 19,000 entries lists year of release, running time, director, principal cast, and availability on video. Other guides may offer even more information, but Maltin's is distinguished by the quality of its reviews. Rating films on a scale from "****" to "BOMB," it offers a comprehensive introduction to the international cinema, covers the classics with the respect they deserve, unearths thousands of little-known gems, takes the wind out of the overrated, and laughs at the awful with appropriate good humor. If you want proof of Maltin's versatility, compare the reviews of The Battleship Potemkin, History Is Made at Night, Blue Velvet, and The Navy vs. the Night Monsters. Standard, crucial, great fun to read, chock full of trivia, and bursting with passion for the movies. --Raphael Shargel

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Movie Lovers! Nov 24 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
We use this book about as often as we use the dictionary! The descriptions are longer than those found in the TV guides, but are still pretty short. I don't think they could be any longer without leaving out a lot of titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leonard Maltin's 2001 Movie & Video Guide May 8 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm an old lady. I signed on because I was trying to look up a movie by Helena Bonham Carter in Leonard Maltin's 2001 Movie and Video Guide and found she was not listed. I wanted to inform Maltin of this oversight. Please forward this information to him if you know how; I don't. Sigh. Eileen

1.0 out of 5 stars The Dimwit Critic Dec 22 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Anyone who would refer to my husband as a "dimwitted master" is pretty dimwitted himself.I would like to see him enter an arena full of lions. That is one profession where you have to have your wits to stay alive. But I think it is easier to sit back and just criticize.("Fearless Fagan")

1.0 out of 5 stars Everybody's a critic. Why?
Imagine a doctor or a CPA so incompetent at his/her job. Makes you wish there was a standardised test for critics. A perfect book for the moronic "two thumbs up" set. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars He gives me milk when I want vodka
Safe. Unimaginative. Pedestrian. Conformist. Boring. Spielberg fan.

That's it, I'm out of insults to throw at this book.

And to think people take it seriously!

1.0 out of 5 stars Give me Roger Ebert any day.
Poor, poor Leonard Maltin. He just hates his job. How do I know this? I've read hundreds of his reviews and always find him complaining that the film went on too long. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this guy a putz, or what?
This guy's opinions are for people who don't have much depth of emotion. Otherwise, he's right on the money. Try Roger Ebert, instead.
