I don't like the "no-music-staff" method that's used at first... A lot of very good music sheets to practice (if you previously learned somewhere else), but this learning method is akward and dull in my opinion...

Génial, intelligent, actuel et très musical. Enfin une approche différente qui commence par le "son" et le rythme, avec des arrangements magnifiques. Je suis sous le charme !

Complete and accessible... April 22 2006
By Arena Connery - Published on
Many children's methods may not appeal to the adult learner. Hal Leonard's Adult Piano Method takes all the core concepts of it's student method books and presents them at a more 'graduated' pace. This book combines theory, technique, and solos. The CDs have both practice and performance tempos for each accompaniment track. The accompaniments are also written at the bottom of each piece in the book.

This book can be used with a teacher or on your own. Having four authors keeps the material fresh and varied. Also important is the inclusion of improv exercises. And if you like this book, there are supplementary items like 'Popular Hits' and 'Christmas Favorites.'

Hal Leonard Student Piano Adult Piano Method - Book 1 June 11 2007

Very good info. Wish it had more practice pages / songs, per section. Also would be nice to explicitly let student know how many beats to expect before each song begins, so student can always start with the CD. Otherwise, it's a very good system!

I was hoping for a book that moved slowly to give me time to grind in techniques before moving on. This book moves faster than I had anticipated. 2 weeks after opening it, 1 hour a day, I'm on the last song feeling comfortable. That was a week ago, I'm waiting for book 2 to get here. I've continued playing daily out of this book, but my hour a day has changed to a half hour because it only takes me about 30 minutes to burn through the second half of the songs with minimal errors.

This book starts off not even using sheet music, but instead using large notes, with the letter names written on them, moving up and down. The point here is to get the student's fingers a little used to the keys and the direction of the notes in association with the keys.

The song selection is brilliant. After a technique has been introduced and a song has been played involving that technique. The song associated with the next introduced technique will include the previously introduced tech.

Essentially, the book builds on itself, one step at a time.

The 4 star is because I believe this book nearly REQUIRES previous experience with sheet music. The book has very little instruction involved with the rythmn values of notes and rests. Ofcourse the Audio Cd would help.

Recommended. This is my first time on piano and I feel pretty good about my progress.

Good initial or re-start book for sight reading Oct. 22 2014
By Joanne - Published on
I like this book a great deal. I've wanted to learn to sight read piano for a long time. I've been a guitar player since 1963 and pedal steel player since 1980. I read treble clef well, but stink at the bass clef. This book has really helped me.
The song's in Book 1 are very simple at first, but the accompaniment makes things entertaining. You get a slightly slow version with the piano and then a full speed version with just the accompaniment. In addition, each song has a full midi file for you to play with in any midi sequencer.
My biggest gripe is that the book does not include chord symbols with the songs. But, the music makes them quite obvious in most cases.
