Product Description

After Les Misérables became a huge hit in London, it moved to Broadway, bringing along two stars from the London production, Colm Wilkinson as the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle as the despondent Eponine. Filling out this 1987 cast are Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers). Whether you prefer the London cast or this one just might depend on which one you heard first, though minor revisions to the show since its London debut make the Broadway version more familiar to current audiences. In fact, the 10th anniversary concert might have the best overall cast of the lot, while the three-disc symphonic recording is a must for completists.

Regardless of cast, Les Misérables has become a sensation. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score is filled with beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?"), and Victor Hugo's classic novel of a student uprising in pre-revolutionary France provides a compelling story line that continues to thrill audiences all over the world. --David Horiuchi

I bought this CD thinking it was a newly released highlights CD of the Original London Cast CD with Colm Wilkinson, Patti LuPone, Michael Ball & Francis Ruffle. IT'S NOT! What a great way to get people to bye the CD. I really haven't listened to it because I was disgusted at the fact that I was lured into buying a CD under false pretences! (I did listen to some and it sounds like Kareoke music and Fantine was vocally weak. This is not a cast recording but a STUDIO RECORDING.) I can tell you the actors who sing the parts though (Something I would've wanted to know before buying, but I didn't have that chance, so here it is.)
VALJEAN & JAVERT = John Curl, FANTINE & COSETTE = Lindsey Stafford Smith, MARIUS= Christopher Smith, ENJOLRAS= Adam Pinter, THENARIDIER=Julian Emery, M. THENARDIER= Catherine Watson.
Uhhh, why have the same man sing 2 different parts. Okay, maybe I can see the same woman singing the mother and daughter, but the rivals?
Songs only from Act I of Les Miz!
Anyhow, the singers could turn out to be good for all I know, but I was just upset that it wasn't what it said it was. Although it wasn't listed as having Colm and Patti it did say "Original London Cast." So, at least now you can purchase this CD fully aware that it's not the London Cast! :)

Les Mis is a great musical... This is not a great soundtrack, but it's the only affordable one Amazon sells(figure that out)...
The first time I saw Les Mis was at a small local high school. It was pretty bad, for the most part, but the musicians as well as some of the actors redeemed the performance. Valjean was excellent, Thernardier was pretty good, but most of all, the musicians in the performance performed quite well. The premise of a MUSICAL is for it to BE musical, and have good quality instrumental music as well as good quality acting... ideally. This recording has one of the above...
I was looking forward to getting this version, but when I actually got it, I started listening to the songs and was rather disappointed. I can sit down at my computer and probably write an arrangement to accompany the performance of Les Mis in cheap quality MIDI and have it sound better than this.
For example, in tracks 5 and 8, the background part has some kind of guitar or something or other and it just sounds absolutely terrible. I Dreamed a Dream is generally considered to be one of the better songs in the entire musical, and it's a shame that it has to get virtually ruined with this kind of tacky synthetic sound... But this happens to many of the songs.
Three stars for the effort, for it being Les Mis, and for the singing being decent. I just think it's terrible when a great musical has to have such a terrible, tacky sounding 'orchestral' accompaniment.

The Broadway cast album of LES MISERABLES is different in a lot of ways to the original London album. Though a few of the performers followed the show Stateside, the overall tone of the shows seems lighter and more airy than the London album. Is this a good thing for LES MISERABLES? I don't know, but I do know that I get a lot of enjoyment out of listening to this particular version of the score. Frances Ruffelle reprises her role of Eponine from London, and sounds quite different. She sounds more American in her singing, and gets to play opposite a new Marius (David Bryant). Colm Wilkinson again takes the role of Valjean though his performance hardly varies. Randy Graff replaces Patti LuPone in the role of Fantine and gives the role a new spin. Though LuPone made Fantine's despair and downfall an almost palpable intensity, Graff's Fantine slowly moves towards her destruction. Both performances are great, but if I want to have a really good cry I play the LuPone version. Jennifer Butt and Leo Burmester are highly-comical as the Thenardiers', and Judy Kuhn is a perfect Cosette. Terrence Mann is still one of the all-time best Javert's. If you've already purchased the London album, then I wholly recommend that you experience the Broadway version.

Inspired by the long and tedious yet wonderful novel written by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables has become one of the most recognizable and beloved musicals of the twentieth (and early twenty-first!) century. Sadly, Les Miserables stopped its run on Broadway in May of 2003. I suppose you can only hope for the off broadway cast to come near your city to experience the magic, but this CD will due while you wait!
This is the second CD of Les Miserables recorded in English after the London Cast. Colm Wilkinson and Frances Ruffelle came to America to join the Broadway Cast, and we are glad that they did! Their energy is needed in such a musical as this!
The basic plot of LES MISERABLES the musical is the struggle of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, to become a part of society again. He was sent to jail for 19 years just for stealing a loaf of bread in order to feed his starving family. Of course the musical does not touch most of what is in the book because the musical is only three hours long, whereas it would take a couple of weeks to finish the book! Jean Valjean is haunted by his past and cannot find food or shelter because of the yellow ticket he wears that proclaims that he is an ex-convict. A kind bishop allows him to stay, and Valjean takes advantage of the old man by stealing silver and taking off. Valjean is brought back by constables to face the bishop, but the bishop lies for him. Valjean is touched when the bishop tells him that his soul is bought for God. Valjean changes his life around and breaks his parole by leaving the city. The story gets involved with the miserable Fantine and her orphaned daughter Cosette, and it then goes to the romance between Marius and Cosette. And then there is the revolution. There are fighting songs that will make you get goosebumps.
