Even if you aren't fluent in French, you'll love this!, July 28 2008
This review is from: Les Nordiques: Notre équipe (DVD)
This two-disc DVD set (approx. 4 hrs in total length) is in French with smatterings of English (i.e., some player interviews and play-by-play on the action clips). Don't let the language dissuade you from purchasing this amazing history of the Quebec Nordiques from their birth in the WHA in 1972 to their sad move to Denver in the fall of 1995.
Now since amazon doesn't have the info up there to make your decision on whether to buy this DVD set, let me fill you in.
Disc 1 has two parts. Both sections are talking heads clips of the people involved interspersed with video hilites. The WHA one is about half as long as the NHL one. On the WHA one we get the following, and I'll do my best to loosely translate:
1. Birth of the Nords
2. 1st camp and 1st season
3. Arrival of Rejean Houle, Serge Bernier and Marc Tardif
4. 1975 playoffs
5. J.C. Tremblay tribute
6. Rick Jodzio attack on Tardif in the playoffs
7. 1977 Avco Cup chmapionship
8. Arrival of owner Marcel Aubut
NHL part:
1. Entry into the NHL
2. First game vs. the Atlanta Flames
3. Arrival of Peter and Anton Stastny
4. 1982 playoff series vs. the Habs
5. Stastnys, Michel Goulet, Dale Hunter and coach Michel Bergeron
6. The rivalry with Montreal
7. Good Friday 1984 playoff brawl vs. Habs
8. 1985 playoff series vs. Habs
9. 1987 playoff series vs. Habs (incl. the controversial referee Kerry Fraser's non-goal call that turned the series)
10. Departures of Hunter and Bergeron
11. Impact of Marcel Aubut on the NHL (focuses on Rendez-Vous '87 series held in Quebec City between the USSR and the NHL All-Stars)
12. The Eric Lindros draft and trade
13. 1993 playoff series vs. Habs
14. Departure for Colorado
Disc 2 has some nice extras. There are more talking heads (including fans, players, coaches and media) on a variety of topics (called Entrevues) and the most surprising to me of which was how popular Peter Stastny was as I assumed a French-Canadian would come out #1 (although J.C. Tremblay is a distant second).
There is also a fight reel (Quelques bagarres!) that seems endless and a memorable, pretty good pic quality, goal reel (Peter Statsny gets his share but Dale Hunter steals the show). The goal reel is in the Archives which also features the following (the WHA games have extremely washed-out colors making the ice look way too white, by the way, and have English play-by-play):
--1977 WHA Avco Cup Final Game 7 hilites vs. Winnipeg Jets (Don Wittman does the play-by-play, includes post-game Cup presentation + J.C. Tremblay scene worth not spoiling here)
--1978 WHA QF Game 5 hilites vs. Houston Aeros
--Oct. 13, 1979, first game hilites vs. Habs (includes Roger Doucet anthem and Radio Canada coverage as well as post-game interview with goalie Michel Dion)
Overall, I'd say it's worth whatever you pay for it. It really shows what a rich history the Nordiques had and how passionate the fans and players were. The Battle of Quebec clips shows you just what fans are missing now without the Nordiques in the NHL.
