One for the ages...,

This review is from: Let England Shake (Audio CD)
Let England Shake is a profoundly beautiful and haunting piece of work that finds the great PJ Harvey at the height of her powers. I believe they'll be listening to this album 100 years from now. I certainly haven't stopped listened to it constantly for the last year!

Great album,

I must say this is a great album which I cannot stop listening for 2 weeks now. I really like the first couple of albums of PJ Harvey (Dry, Rid of Me, To Bring You My Love, Is This Desire?), but a couple of recent ones didn't touch me that much, although I like them too. This is one is again great. Maybe not so eccentric as the first albums, the sound is not so rough, definitely, much easier to listen to, but really nice and it's still has PJ Harvey features like the background "crying" sounds in "England". PJ likes to make each album different than the previous ones, and I am looking forward to her next creation.

Hauntingly Beautiful,
This review is from: Let England Shake (Audio CD)
I for one am someone who has not really listened a great deal to PJ Harvey. There have been some tunes here and there, and I've respected her originality, but she never quite gripped me; that is to say, until I listened to this record. I can understand how long time fans would be a bit alienated by this sound, but I find this record to not only have very strong songwriting and production, but it also sees an artist not afraid to bear her true soul and to put every ounce of herself into each song. This is a downbeat record. The sound is dark, the lyrics are dark, the mood is dark. But at every stage, it is beautiful. There is too much music being created nowadays that is different for the sake of being different, music that lacks genuine soul. I don't think PJ Harvey ever created records like that, and she definitely hasn't done it again this time. The only difference is, she seemed less afraid to show herself here, and you can hear it with every song. At least I could. I can't get enough of this album. Listen for yourselves is the best advice I can give. Her voice here sounds like a mix of Souxie Sioux and Regine Chassagne of Arcade Fire, and that to me is a great thing.
