1.0 out of 5 stars Up was the only way to go after this, Nov 14 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Let Me Up Ive Had Enough (Audio CD)
This is for the most die-hard Petty fanatics only. After 4 great recordings, a 5th that didn't quite measure up to earlier work, and the largely-failed but interesting experiment of "Southern Accents" - which at least had some great musical and lyrical moments - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit bottom with this CD. Hard. I love this band, have been a fan for a quarter century, go to their shows whenever I can, and I can find at least a couple of great songs on "Southern Accents" or "Echo" or "The Last DJ", the albums people seem to love to hate. But not here.

When this CD came out - the first recording of the CD era for this band; not sure why someone below thought they'd "recaptured" the vinyl sound well - it was fun to hear some new songs, but only if you were in just the right mood; one in which you could stand utter mediocrity. Loud, in-your-face mediocrity. There is a lot of posturing, some catchy power chord riffs in a song or two, and a complete loss of the garage-rock or folk-rock sound of the earlier recordings. There isn't one interesting melody or chord progression, not a single song with memorable lyrics. Quit jammin' me indeed - there doesn't seem to be much thought behind the songwriting, and way too much whaling on the same chord. Sometimes it feels like a (boring) jam session.

Don't care about melody or harmony or lyrics? Is Tom Petty's voice and a good beat enough to float your boat? You might like this. Otherwise, this is really boring 80's rock that represents the nadir of Petty's career. If I want to listen to good hard vital rock from the late 80's, I'll pull out a Pixies CD - TP and the Heartbreakers just couldn't pull it off anymore, whether it was because they were too old or because they were in a creative slump. It was a mistake for them to try here, and I'm glad they got over it, accepted middle age, got another burst of creativity, and came out with Full Moon fever a couple years later. Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) certainly wasn't the end of Tom Petty making great music; it was just a break from it.

But I couldn't recommend this to anyone who is a fan, whether of the early Damn the Torpedoes sound, the later Full Moon Fever or Wildflowers sounds, or of Southern Accents. Save your money or get one of Petty's dozen or so better CD's.

2.0 out of 5 stars Half and half, Feb 19 2010
This review is from: Let Me Up Ive Had Enough (Audio CD)
Simple: the energy and the playing are there, the songs aren't. Not one memorable song in the bunch. But the band still plays them as their lives depended on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Rockin CD, Jan 9 2003

This review is from: Let Me Up Ive Had Enough (Audio CD)
This one is often overlooked by Tom Petty and The Heartbreaker fans but I feel it is one of their best. Give it a listen, its one rockin CD.
