Impossible Not To Love,
By Peter Gueckel (Calgary AB Canada) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Let Them Talk Special Edition (Audio CD)
Hugh Laurie was unknown to me until I heard St. James Infirmary. Although not a big blues fan, I had to hear more. The particular appeal of this album is that Laurie's is a more subtle blues than most, taking its time to work its rhythm into your consciousness, but once it has, it is impossible not to love. You get 18 blues standards, a live version of one of them, and, in this special edition, a bonus DVD of a live concert in New Orleans. Don't pass it up.

Quirky voice, but fantastic cd,

This review is from: Let Them Talk (Audio CD)
My love Hugh Laurie as an actor from old British sit coms drew me to buying this cd, but I don't watch "House", where many North Americans have come to know him. I didn't realize his talent as a musician, so it was a gamble as a purchase -- and one that paid off. Although vocally he is not the strongest, his interpretation and musicianship is compelling. His quirky voice suits many of the songs, where a melodious voice would sound contrived. He comes across as believable as a singer of old blues standards. A very entertaining CD. Very talented collaborating vocalists and accompanying players, this is an easy blues CD to listen to.

Real New Orleans spirit,

This review is from: Let Them Talk (Audio CD)
My husband and I really love this CD. Hugh Laurie has really caught the real New Orleans sound and spirit. We had heard him play lots of Cole Porter and other 20's and 30's tunes when he acted the role of Bertie Worcester in Jeeves and Worcester, but were very pleasantly surprised when we first heard tunes from this CD on Saturday Night Blues on CBC 2. We immediately ordered it from Amazon and have plauyed it a lot. His version of the St. James Infirmary is really superb. When listening to the CD we really wish we were back visiting New Orleans. Well worth buying if you are a traditional jazz lover.
