Product Description

One of Canada’s finest crime reporters tells the whole story of the infamous Bernardo-Homolka case.

NOW UPDATED WITH A NEW CHAPTER

The sensational trials of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka for abduction, rape, manslaughter and murder caused widespread controversy that continues to this day. The public was particularly outraged by the so-called “sweetheart deal” — the twelve-year sentence Homolka received as part of an agreement with government lawyers.

Journalist Nick Pron gives us a comprehensive account of previously banned information about Bernardo and Homolka; about Homolka’s role in the death of her sister Tammy; of slip-shod police work and lack of communication that allowed Bernardo and Homolka the opportunity to murder schoolgirls Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy; of the host of disturbing facts that were ruled inadmissable at the trial.

A new chapter details the most recent, shocking facts of Homolka’s life in prison, including her alleged “special treatment,” such as private access to the prison’s beauty salon and gym, and rumoured liaisons in Kingston’s Prison for Women. Also detailed are her startling plans for the future.

As Karla Homolka’s release date nears, many will reflect on her place in history, and on the Canadian legal system.

Ingram

Until their capture in 1993, Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo preyed on schoolgirls and videotaped their sexual assaults and sadistic killings in grisly detail. Now, the crime reporter dedicated to their story presents the comprehensive account of the spree, the manhunt, and the trial that horrified and mesmerized the public. Includes eight pages of photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars The uncensored truth. More potent than fiction., May 18 2002

(REAL NAME)
"Lethal Marriage" tells the (sadly) true story about Canada's most imfamous murderous couple, their crimes, their trials, and their effect on the public at large. This was the most sensational, horrific, and scarring murder case in Canadian History.

All the warnings you have read so far are well justified, this book is a bitter pill to swallow. But if you are considering reading a book on the subject, you likely know what you are getting into. The book details the brutal murders of three young girls (I count Karla's sister as one of them), the series of rapes in the 1980's (that threw the public into a panic), and their controversial trials. The imfamous video tapes made of the brutal rapes are spelled out, almost transcripted in this book. It is not easy to stomach, but it shows the extent of which not only Bernardo, but Homolka is guilty. One of the cornerstones of "Lethal Marriage" is showing that, although abused, Karla Homolka was an active participant, and therefore just as guilty. Her plea bargain caused quite a stir of public anger.

At the heart of "Lethal Marriage" is an important story that needed to be told. It is a story about a flawed system, poor police work, and the circumstances where at least three people died because of poor communication and the fact that Bernardo's DNA evidence sat on the sheft for 2 years, untouched, while he was on his crime spree. As the author pointed out, "There are many cases of fine police work in the past, this case is not one of those successes. To say otherwise would be a lie". Nick Pron is a well-respected crime reporter with over 30 years of experience, and his opinionated approach helps to bring details to light that show how sloppy the police work was, and how guilty the killers were.

Whatever your opinion on the case, this will be a hard book to put down once you start. It is very well written, and is more shocking than any work of fiction out there. Some consider this book an injustice to the families of the victims, or that it is pornographic. I can't totally disagree with them, but it's still a good book. Just be warned, you may have trouble sleeping after reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shocking, horrifying, disgusting yet riveting., July 18 2010
This review is from: Lethal Marriage (Updated Edition): The Uncensored Truth Behind the Crimes of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka (Mass Market Paperback)
Paul Bernardo was just a couple years younger than me, and I remember this horrifying tale very well. The newspaper and TV accounts were very sketchy at the time, offering few details due to the media gag imposed by the Ontario courts, so this book really filled in the blanks for me. I lived in Toronto when the Scarborough rapist was on the loose and my girlfriend lived in Guildwood (Scarborough) where he was on the prowl. In fact, I was one of the worried boyfriends the author speaks of, waiting patiently at the bus stop many a night, to escort her safely home. If you lived in Scarborough when this creep was on the loose, this book will REALLY send chills down your spine. WARNING: Not for the faint of heart or those with weak stomachs.
