Book Description

March 8 2011 Let's Go
One straddles two millennia, the other, two continents: Athens and Istanbul rank among the world's oldest and culturally rich cities. The cradle of democracy and the crucible of empires are inextricably linked to the past - Let's Go Athens and Istanbul shows travelers how to embrace them in the present. With the help of Let's Go's witty, wily student researchers, travelers learn the subtle difference between raki and ouzo, the intricacies of the Grand Bazaar, and the rules of the Athens metro, as well as irreverent anecdotes about everyone from Athena to the Ottoman Emperor. From the Acropolis to the Hagia Sofia, Let's Go Athens and Istanbul is the perfect guide to immersive, engaging travel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information and easy to understand June 16 2014

This was a decent book to bring to Greece, it was easy to locate information I was looking for and had lots of info I never would have thought to look for. The information on small social differences, like what is acceptable in a church (much stricter rules than I was used to). The info on the Greek islands was a bit lacking, so once I left the mainland (Athens), I didn't use it again, but it was comforting to have it in my bag. The book was small and light enough to toss in any part of my backpack or purse, so it was easy to tote around without a problem.

This book is extremely short and had very little information. The maps are impossible to read on an iPad or kindle!

This book really helps me when I took the independent tour of Istanbul in October 2012. But the book doesn't advise that on Idul Qurban Festival and National Day the Grand Bazaar will be closed for the whole week!
