Book Description

October 1999
Children love balls! On each page, readers share the joy and enthusiasm as a little boy plays with his collection of balls. He kicks, pitches, catches, slaps and tees up various balls. Then he swings at, whacks, rolls, and pushes other balls. Finally he admits," I love them all." Marty Allen along with Judann Weichselbraun, capture a child's natural love affair with balls of every size and shape." Let's Play Ball," also has an interactive dimension enticing the child to find the hidden ball in each illustration. Most children will immediately want to find their favorite balls and "act out" the story.

About the Author

Marty Allen began her children's book projects when her children were toddlers. Marty is committed to sparking a child's interest in language through reading. She has a personal reason for focusing on children learning language through reading. Marty's son didn't use language to express himself when he was young. Her son became interested in words as she put simple text to family photographs, binding them into books. Her son began to express himself as she presented the simple text and favorite photos. Marty was encouraged to share her work publicly. Along with illustrator Judann Weichselbraun she produced " Let's Play Ball" from one of her original books.

we have been checking out this book from the Library for 3 months running and feel badly for hording it. My son, 21 months, adores this book. He likes pointing to the different types of balls (basketball, paddleball, football, soccer ball, etc.) and we talk about the activities (shooting a basketball, kicking a soccer ball, etc.) and now his favorite thing to do is to "find the little red rubber ball" that is hidden on each page. The second to last page of the book is a boy asking, "Have you seen my little rubber ball?" and finally I realized that this little rubber ball (red) is hidden on each page. Simply reading the text is fine, but this book is simply fun to PLAY with!!!!!!!!! Our conversations often drift to other things that the child pictured can do with a 'soccer ball' and what colors are on the ball and where we last saw a soccer ball, etc. This is a book to read, discuss, discover, and enjoy. The illustrations are vivid watercolor and detailed enough for a small child, but lovely enough for an adult to appreciate.

Let's Play Ball is a charming story about a boy's love for playing ball games. This is a beautiful book and a good primer for teaching small children action words. The delightful watercolor illustrations remind you of the simple delights of childhood.
