4.0 out of 5 stars Midnight rammble in your living room! June 4 2011
By Stephen Bieth TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This was filmed a couple of years ago. After dirt farmer came out. If you have not had a chance to catch Levon since his comeback this is a good way to see what you are missing. I have had the chance to check him out at Massy Hall a couple of times and this DVD does a good job of capturing it. What you get is a large group of musicians and singers and everybody gets a turn in the spot light. So Levon will sing a couple then someone else will take a turn. This DVD has a great list of guest stars. Weather it be Billy Bob Thorton or Sheryl Crow there is something for everyone. The reason I am only giving this four stars is that it only runs a little over an hour. Where the real shows clock in at over two hours. But that aside this is a great DVD.

2.0 out of 5 stars DRG review Aug. 13 2011
Format:DVD
Well I guess I am a bit disappointed in the sound mostly, Levon puts great effort
in the all the material but I thought by using the Ryman Theater in Nashville it would
have had better results. I guess I was so amazed when Neil Young performed there a few
years back it really set the bar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wait a minute Chester.... July 2 2011

....and watch this DVD. Blues, Country, Rock and Roll - Whatever - This video is toe tapping fun. I hesitated to buy this DVD, because I was not familiar with all the songs and musicians, but after viewing it, my hesitation was unfounded. Great music by all.

I was impressed with the quality of the transfer, both visual and audio. I listened to both 5.1 and stereo, but found my best option was to pick the 5.1 option on the DVD, and the 7.1 stereo option on my amp. This way, I still had the nice surround sound and good bass, but the highs from my back four speakers also filled the room. - A win win for me.

A stand out on the bass drum is during the song A Train Robbery - Your dog will run and hide and the neighbors may call to complain. The horn section, which I am usually not a fan of, was great too. The video runs just under 75 minutes and leaves you wanting more. Rag Mama Rag......

Overall - A keeper for multiple viewings. NOTE: Amazon indicates a release of the DVD in May, 2011, however the DVD I received has a 2009 date on the package and the same 2009 date in the credits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff! May 24 2011
By Lavrans - Published on Amazon.com

There is a version of this concert which is currently being shown on PBS TV stations- it is highly edited, and intended to be a fund-raiser, joining the ghost of Roy Orbison. If you want the whole concert, buy this!

The leader of the band is Larry Campbell, who doesn't get nearly enough credit or recognition for his excellent performances on guitar and fiddle. A heck of a guy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Roots Music + Great Guest Artists = A Very Good Concert DVD!!!!! Nov. 18 2011
By Gary Covington - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This concert dvd filmed at the famous Nashville's Historic Ryman Auditorium on September 17, 2008, contains some excellent "Roots Music", including some blues, a Carter Family Song (No Depression in Heaven), several songs written by Robbie Robertson Of "The Band" (in which Levon Helm was a member), plus some more traditional "rootsy" songs. The Levon Helm Band in this concert dvd is fairly large, and you get all kinds of musical instruments played, including horns. Levon plays the drums, and mandolin, and also sings lead vocals on most songs. Plus, you get terrific Guest Artists, including: Sam Bush, Sheryl Crow, John Haitt, Buddy Miller, George Receli and Billy Bob Thornton.

All the songs are great, but I really enjoyed their version of "The Weight", which has become a classic song, covered by many artists. It was written by Robbie Robertson of "The Band".

If you like "Rootsy" type music, then you'll really enjoy this one. Thanks!!!!

P.S. The legendary, Levon Helm, passed away after the filming/recording of this DVD. So, that makes this dvd a little more special.
