5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing, insightful collection Sept. 10 2012

Cary Fagan is a writer based in Toronto, and My Life Among the Apes is an intriguing collection of "slice of life" short stories.

"The Floating Wife" is the story of Albert, a Supreme Court judge whose true passion in life is performing magic tricks - a passion that is ill-understood by his image-conscious wife. Albert himself sees no conflict between these two worlds, and indeed takes the magician's vow of not revealing how tricks are done very seriously. His wife recounts:

"I remember one occasion in the early seventies when, by an accident of scheduling, the premier of the province, who wanted Albert to head a commission on payoffs in the building trades, arrived in a limousine at our house for tea at the same time that Robert Harbin, the creator of the zig-zag girl illusion, arrived by cab from the airport. I answered the door to the both of them and was highly embarrassed, but my husband simply introduced the politician and the conjurer to one another and, after the premier swore an oath of secrecy, the three of them spent several hours in the special wing."

It may be that Albert, accomplished in both domains, understands that whether a Supreme Court judge or a magician, the trick is to make a re-presentation (how things appear), pass for a presentation (how things are). Both are deep expressions of the psychology of perception (cf. Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals About Our Everyday Deceptions by Dr. Stephen Macknik and Dr. Susana Martinez-Conde).

After Albert's wife leaves him, he adds a new trick to his repertoire, "The Floating Wife". Though not described in the story, the nature of the trick is quite clear: to make it appear as if the wife is floating loose, disconnected, when in reality she is still tightly connected - a reality that can only be revealed once the show is over.

Cary Fagan is a talented writer, and My Life among the Apes is an intriguing, insightful collection.
