In Life as We Know It, Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel discover that their closest friends have appointed them guardians of their child in the unlikely event of their joint death--an unlikely event that has just happened. Make no mistake: There's no reason this movie should have been any good. The premise is the worst kind of formulaic Hollywood claptrap; the pleasant but cautious Heigl (Knocked Up) is playing yet another uptight fussbudget; since a promising movie debut in the underrated Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, Duhamel has largely coasted on his looks in tripe like the Transformers movies--yet Life as We Know It is surprisingly likable. After the movie gets through the basic exposition--and navigates some radical shifts in tone with unexpected deftness--the script somehow manages to make its clichés into something resembling real human situations. The colorful supporting characters are all entertainingly written and well played by a solid cast. And both Heigl and Duhamel give understated, engaging performances that manage to make the inevitable conclusion seem almost not inevitable. Director Greg Berlanti (The Broken Hearts Club) deserves kudos for skillfully balancing humor and pathos and turning this unpromising material into a sincere and enjoyable movie. --Bret Fetzer

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, touching film., Jan 24 2011

This review is from: Life As We Know It (DVD)
I went to see this movie expecting a chickflick comedy with nothing much to it besides laughs and a predictable storyline. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by a thoughtful, and at times touching, movie that incorporates both tears and laughter (yes, you might reach for your tissues.)

This movie revolves around a plotline in which two people with opposite personalities become the legal guardians to their mutual friends' child. The two leads, Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl, both play their parts well, playing two characters so opposite from each other that your find it hard to believe that they are expected to live together to care for their friends' child. However, this challenge is one that they must overcome, a task filled with both struggles and moments of joy.

Along with the child and the house that the two leads inherit from their friends, they also inherit a neighborhood of wacky, yet hilarious, neighbors. Many of the laughs in this movie will come from the supporting cast.

Overall, this movie is will probably appeal mostly to women, but as "chick-flicks" go, it is grounded and "real" enough that it may appeal to a wider audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good, Nov 13 2011
This review is from: Life As We Know It (DVD)
This movie was purchased after watching the trailer for it. My family watched it together, even though there was a couple inappropriate parts that the kids just shouldn't have heard, but most of it was clean. Very touching movie and recommended for anyone.
