I am so glad seaman Thaddeus Nowakowski decided not to destroy his contraband diary when discovered by chief boatswain's mate Talledo in December 1942. My dad served as Quartermaster aboard the USS Mohawk on the Greenland Patrol later in the war, and, even though the Mohawk was a bigger ship, this book gave me some great insights about what he must have experienced during that time.
